Rob's GTS engine pull

why didnt you use a stock s4 block and put all the rotating assembly into that?
just curious. is it because its hard to find the special pistons? could you use stock S4 pistons and have different rods made? I know there must of been a reason why... so, thought i would ask

Because a 5-speed GTS is worth more with its original engine than with some generic S4 motor in it. The only valuable piece of that GTS block will be its stamp pad, but the value is likely greater than the cost of sleeving plus pistons. Purely an economic decision.

Where was this done Rob?

It's one of those deals where if I told you, I'd have to kill you, before Greg killed me to exact retribution for telling you his sources before he was killed by the machine shop owner for allowing his customer to reveal the source. When I showed up to drop the block off, I started to say, 'I'm one of Greg's cust-" and he told me to take the block around back and drop it off. End of conversation. Apparently he's the Engine **** of L.A. county.

coulnd you cut out the GTS identification block pad and weld it on the S4 block? wouldnt that be more valuable than a GTS block with sleeves?
anyway, sounds like it worked out and you might have a GTS bottom end that doesnt burn as much oil now.

Not sure whether this link will work (it made me wait for 10 seconds...) but the discussion there is typically obsessive arguing back and forth about the originality (or not) of the broach patterns on the stamp pad of Chevy motors. Some people take their engine serial numbers very seriously, when 'matching numbers' becomes a five figures issue:

Moving engine numbers is illegal.....and also would be fraud if resold...not that it does not happen.

Since internet 'knowledge' lasts forever, future interest in a "numbers matching" engine might be colored by all the information shared here on how it was rescued from the recycling pot.
Curious -- where is the exact engine number (stanped on the block pad) related to a specific chassis/VIN number? My chassis/VIN and engine block numbers are not the same. The engine number is not listed on the window sticker either. Is it on a COA from Porsche?

Oh, it'll never be a no-stories car, there are lots of stories. It's just that all the stories will be verifiably true, and a properly rebuilt GTS motor that attended to its inherent faults should be worth something to someone. Or I'm completely deluding myself, don't discount that possibility.....
The link between chassis VIN and engine (and trans) serial number isn't on a COA, it's on the build sheet, which a dealer ought to be able to get if you ask nicely enough. Here's the one for my GTS:

since the s4 block is near identical to the GTS block, i think the S4 block would work and be a lot less work. I dont know though.... has that ever been done?
anyone ever make a GTS engine with S4 pistons and custom rods?

at what point does the cutting up the block change this. For all practical purposes, those sleeves have found a new engine block number!

How many pieces you want to cut? I can quickly think of four different things in any 928 block which all must be either exactly right or in correct range for block to pass originality test. Most visible stamped number on top is not only one which needs to be correct for collector car market. Besides its easier to fake S4 block to look like GTS block than to cut GTS block into pieces and attach them to S4 block. At least when block is in car and all additional stuff is mounted in.
