Default Need help with another smog test issue

Went to the smog place today to get the 88 tested and failed, although JUST

Some info about the car

193K miles
Good tested CAT
Good tested O2
New rebuilt MAF

No other service history

I have a free retest but want to make sure it passes on the retest so i dont have to pay for another one

So I am thinking of just throwing in some of the copper plugs and giving it a go, but I am thinking maybe there is something else that could use attention. Mind you i am not trying to restore this car, just get it to pass smog so i can properly register it in CA and resell it.

Here are the failing numbers

15 mph HC - Max 110 / Measured 114 Everything else is ok
25mph NO (PPM) Max 711 / measured 954 Everything else is ok

Plugs are unknown age, but i always go to plugs after Dr. Bob told me one time that he failed a test, then put in the spec copper plugs and passed. Is there anything else i should look at before the retest?

The high HC means that there is a miss. Do compression. If it is good, check the plug wires, the caps and rotors, and put in a new set of plugs.

Make sure the cats are real hot next time. I failed barely last time, although a bit closer on NOX than you. The car had sat a bit before that test. I went out and drove the **** out of it on the freeway. I kept the car running until the retest 20 minutes later. It passed.

speaking of that greg, what does a light brown mean on otherwise-clean plugs?

thanks.

Do a BG or a motorVac service and it will pass with numbers that close.

Ryan-

Here- (item 220400859538 if the auction link doesn't work)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=#ht_500wt_977

I won this auction but suddenly have no use for it. $22 and it's yours. You'll need a BG products 9210 sprayer and compressed air, or you can ghetto-fix it with a Milwaukee sure-shot atomizer and blow it down the rearward vacuum hose off the brake venturi:

Don't call me when your neighbors call the fire department on you.

Default how to pass a smog test

I failed my smog test this past December. I think both HC and Nox were high. The car had been running for an hour and was definitely well warmed up for the test. I did a retest 30 minutes later and passed by a wide margin. I did two things two address the problem, so I don't know which one did the trick. The inspector was very talkative and wanted to be helpful. He told me two things:
1) the engine's not getting enough air
2) the engine was too hot
I thought he was nuts when he said these things.
I called a 928 guru and his advice was to remove the air pump filter (top of radiator fan shroud) and retest without the filter. I took my filter out and was amazed by how filthy it was. So, I really think that it was clogged up, cutting down on the efficiency of the air pump system.
I also took the smog technician's advice to let the engine cool down. So, 30 minutes later we did the test with a warm engine (instead of hot) and without an air pump filter. I was a very happy man when I saw the results.

BTW, may car is still running with the original, 22 year old cats!

Regards,
+Greg

REALLY?

whats all that stuff do lol, does that stuff really work, i hate snake oil

i would honestly be hesitant to do it now with the cats that are on it at present probably wouldnt be good with the MAF thats on it either, or the O2 if you know what im saying

SO FOR NOW

I will try Bosch copper + plugs

Will try to remove the smog filter, sounds like a good enough idea

Ive actually got a new set of 4 pintle Bosch Design II 19lb injectors, but was saving those for that White GT that never came, i guess fuel could be an issue, i bought the injectors for the last S4 but it passed with a new cat.

I did notice after the test before i parked the car that it was hot, coolant temp that is. Not sure why, it ran fine before so that maybe related, although i noticed the temp 10 minutes AFTER the test.

The car needs to be debugged, ive only got a couple hours into it but i dont wanna go crazy on this thing. Actually it turns out the cat that was on the car is good, i heard allot of rattling but thats likely the torque tube.

Anyone want an S4 for $6000? Believe it or not it actually looks pretty good, except for the front bumper which has a billion stone chips

It really works when done right.
I was like you before I started using it 15 years ago.

I have seen a car that was over 1100 PPM on HC treated with the BG 3 part kit and nothing else other than run the one tank of gas through it retest at less than 50 PPM.

You do not want to get it on the MAF but I have never had a issue with the cats or O2 sensors after using it, but I have had to change plugs on a couple.

This product is a close to a "Mechanic in a can" as I have ever seen.

They also have a oil additive that many European car shops use called MOA, it is also very good stuff.

I use it in most cars

Here is what a elemental analysis of BG MOA

Antimony 0
barium 0
Boron 0
calcium 9342
mag. 761
Phos. 1922
soduim 1182
zinc 2021
