Start, but won't run 84 L-jet Update: Bad Starter
Hi,
My car has been sitting for 3 weeks waiting for a new starter. I put the starter in today and it works great. Problem is car won't start. It cranks great and seems to catch. It even rev's if I keep the ignition key turned to the "start" position. Then it dies as soon as I release the key to the run position.
Now I think it's flooded. I tried to clear it with the gas pedal to the floor. No luck. I pulled one plug and it was gas soaked.
Car ran very well before this. I thought I'd let it sit for a day or two and try again.
I wonder if this could be electrical, since it runs with key in start position. 84 US L-jet.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

I don't understand the statement above...what do you mean? Did you try squirting starter fluid in the intake? 1 second blast should fire the car up if everythings working.

I know on LH cars (not mine) you can clear a flooded condition by pressing the gas pedal to the floor and running the starter. Is there a similar procedure for L-jet cars? BTW I jumpered the fuel pump and it runs just fine. The battery is well charged, but I will charge some more because of my starting efforts.

Well, I'm very frustrated. The engine fires right up beautifully, but as soon as I release the ignition key to the run position, it stops immediately. I thought it might be running on the cold start valve so I disconnected the Thermotime sensor, which should prevent the cold start injector from firing, and same behavior. I tried jumpering the AFC relay and although I have 12V at the 30 terminal, when I jumpered to the 87 terminal, I got no firing at all. I put the AFC relay back in and the firing returned again but only with ignition switch in start position, dying when in run position. Incidentally the remote starter is basically a duplicate ignition switch, in parallel with the the main switch and in my case attached at the central electric panel. Using the remote starter, the car behaves in the identical manner.
It is behaving as if the ignition or the fuel injectors or both, only fire with starter engaged.
I have not pulled all the spark plugs, but the #1 plug did smell of gas when I pulled it though it was not dripping gas. It looks like a PITA to pull all the plugs, but I will if it will help.

Does your 928 have a factory alarm?..if so it can cause your situation. If you have a long shaft key chances are you have an alarm. Try locking the door with key(make sure the key works the locks first) then open the lock. That should reset the alarm if it is there....good-luck

Start won't run on my 88 once.
Rennlist Email list came up with a "check the ignition amps suggestion."
Those are the 2 button amps under cover next to the hood latch.
I got some electric grease (De-Oxit), unplugged each of the amps and cleaned up the connectors.
Don't know if it's a fluke but that made the car run again.

When jumpering the "injection" AFC relay, remember, isn't this one with two 87 terminals?
So, the jumper would need to be in a Y-shape, that is, make-up a wire arrangment with 3 ends.
Need to jump from power pin to both terminals.
Is there power on that 30 terminal with the key in the run position?

You may have a bad ballast resistor. Instead of running with the starter engaged, see if you have power at the feed end of the resistor(in the pic, top terminal of 0.4Ω resistor.). This power comes from a tap between the 15 pin of the ignition control box and the 15 pin of the ignition switch. Looks like CE panel connectors A4 and A5.

Dave Mckenzie, I'm running two 84's this winter. When it was in the teens, I was starting the 5 speed and getting an intermittent cut-out during driving. Usually went away. One day, leaving work at about 20 deg F, it got worse.
Kept restarting and it would die. I took it out on the highway and it died, I rolled into a fairly bad neighborhood. Was running sans CE covers. I quickly jumped the fuel pump, it started, died and rolled to the other side of the street. Pulled the injection relay, threw in the 3 way jumper, it started and didn't miss all the way home. I think I had an old relay that was making intermittent contact with the extreme cold weather. I replaced it with a new-in-box spare, no problems since. This is the relay with the green dot, right?
