Thumbs up Learned the HARD WAY! -AFC Relays

If you have an L-Jetronic (air flow control-AFC)be advised. If this relay (xv1) goes bad, there are THREE points that must be jumpered together to get you home,unlike the fuel pump relay which requires only 2. There are TWO terminals labeled #87 and one labeled 30. All three of these terminals must be jumpered together for the fuel injection to operate. Each of the #87 terminals operates 4 fuel injectors among other thing. A jumper from the #30 terminal to only one #87 terminal will not allow the fuel injection to operate. This cost me a flatbed bill, BUKU troubleshooting time and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to learn. Hope this saves somebody in the future.

Interesting - I looked at the wiring diagrams for the '80 - '83 models, and all show only one terminal 87 in Relay XVI for the fuel injection.

What year is your car?

Wally;

You are exactly right. The wiring diagram shows only one # 87 terminal. I spoke to Dave about this about 2 PM. That is what cost me the most time. The year of the car is 1981. But I can assure you there are TWO # 87 terminals on that relay. Gee. I sure hope Dave gets me the correct one. Now you've got me worried.

Verrry interesting!

Wonder why the wiring diagram doesn't match reality.

Let us know what happens.
