Ok. Got my new coil and resistors. They measured pretty much the same. Probably my DMM is off at low resistances. With new parts connected, I get same symptoms. Will start promptly and run in start position only. I will measure voltages in the AM when my battery is fully charged.
I will try various alternate jumper positions to see if 12V applied makes everything happy. I do have 12V into the resistor array, but I may use that to trigger a relay for power from the jump post. I may have resistance in the engine wiring harness. I may also have an internal short or other problem in the ignition control unit. I will update in AM.
Thanks

Hey George. Great to hear from you! I'll be working on it on Saturday. Hope you had success with your car.
All the best,

Update:
BAD STARTER!
The 15 terminal on the starter is a dead short to ground! That's why the 0.4 Ohm resistor was getting soooo smoking hot. The starter was the part that I changed that started all this. I did not check for shorts to ground. I just put it in and hooked it up.
I disconnected the wire to the 15 terminal of the starter. The car starts and runs fine. The 0.4 Ohm resistor gets warm but not hot. Voltage at coil 15 terminal 4.8V; voltage at input to resistor array 10.8V. I think I could drive it like this but I give up the bypass circuit for the ignition during cranking. New starter coming on Monday.

Just when you've thought you've figured it out, a new failure mode pops-up.

Great troublshooting thread.

Congrats, Dave. On the road for spring.

NEW STARTER; IT RUNS!!!!
The new starter checked out OK. No short to ground on the 15 terminal. The 50 terminal is a coil on a relay to it has like 0.5 Ohms. The ballast resistors are cool to the touch and the car ran fine. Things I learned:
1. I went through 3 Bosch Premium Rebuilt starters to get one that seems to work.
2. 928 Specialists are very nice people and give great customer service.
3. When a new problem arises, look at the last thing you changed. I knew this but since these were Bosch Premium.....
4. When your car sits for a month, the lifters make a lot of noise for a few minutes.
5. When you have driven your car every day for 4 years, you really miss it when it's down.
6. This forum is extremely helpful!!

I didn't see the resolution on this earlier... glad you got it fixed!
