thoughts.....?
stick with 944's.
the car you describe is a parts car--at best. not knowing anything about 928's is what gets most people in trouble and when they find out just how deep in trouble they are, they bad mouth the 928----unfairly.
figure $2K for the tires/wheels you desire, $4-$5k for the manual conversion, $6K + for the blower kit, and Hydrogen assist (what the heck is this.....?)
Cost-wise, you now have a nice S4, and none of the mechanical nightmares you write about..........

i'm doing the work myself.
i already own the wheels i want
i dont need a manual trans in a 928, but what's the cost for a used 5spd for a 928 (for the part, not for the labor).
what's the difference between the best 928 brakes/hubs/shocks-struts and what's on a 1981 928?
it's not about the destination, anyone can buy a perfect 928, its about taking a peice of junk and making it beautiful and nicer and learning along the way.

I wasn't trying to discourage you from doing what you want, just trying to point out how others will advise you......I have no problem with people investing their money and labor into projects that they enjoy, it's just that on this venue you will get a bunch of grief from those who don't see the value in what you are doing......
as far as the trans, I have one I'll sell you for $500 plus shipping.
The difference in brakes is the early cars had a single piston/sliding caliper system, and the later cars (86.5 and beyond) had the Brembo 4 piston calipers and larger diameter rotors.
Hubs are of no real concern, but the ball joints on the early cars are aluminum and the later cars are steel.
shocks on the very early cars are ride height adjustable and the later ones are adjustable.

If it passes compression and leakdown tests, it might be worth that for motor and parts if all else fails. PS fluid could be a $400+ rack(internal rack bushings are NLA, can you fabricate those? If so you can DIY cheaply).
If you're looking to make money on this car, good luck with that. If you're looking to gain experience at a slight loss(<$1000) it just might be doable.
The differences between the 81 and the GTS are too many to list -- Porsche changed just about everything except the lugnuts and the radiator cap in those 10 years!

i dont think an entire car has too many parts to list, thats just more snobbery like they say a 944 turbo is so great over a 944na which is total BS. put a $1200 homemade supercharger on a 944na and it will out perform a stock 944 turbo around a short track/autox.
