I wanted to add this to the 24hr thread

I had a few thoughts when I started this project.

If I promote the 928 - maybe this will make my collection more valuable in 30 years.

I'm shellfish - I wanted to spend more time with my kids - so I've hog tied them to the car. If they do good, they might be released before track time.

I wanted to spend more time with my friends - we shall hog tie Fabio and send those autographed pictures!

More importantly -
I wanted to try a "per lap" donation - or pledge - if you will, to Rennwish - for those that say "I wish I could help" - thank you - while your good wishes are appreciated, here is a small way you can help too. I've noticed highschools and other groups using the race for just such a purpose.
This way - even if the Florida crew didn't win the race for some reason - nobody would have lost anything, in fact we would have had all the fun.

It would be nice to be helping JD and the kids in some form or manner while having all this fun.

Someone has to know how to put this together like the other teams are doing, with video's, web pages, and the like.

The Crew and I - we would love to get paid for having fun.... but that seems to be against the rules for some reason.
we are only allowed to have a blast providing a car, working on it, and driving...

Thoughts? Anyone else in? I'm lost when it comes to video, forming a webpage, and the like - help is definitly needed and appreciated in all areas....

Just me,
thinking again.....

Contact John D. - tell him I sent ya.

This is an area where I do have some experience. I built one of the cheapest, fastest 79s on record. (so far) . Basically, the car was free, as it was going to the masher when i saw straight fenders , doors, bumpers and rims for rain tires as worth taking the abandoned car home. when i was able to get it running, i thought...... "hmmmm, spare track car to keep the miles off my main racer". So, with no real mods, but the ebach suspension, and straight cut exhaust, we bolted on my forglines and tires and off we went. after it was proving to be a nice running car, we welded in a simple cage. cage was $1200, seat $100, exhaust $100, suspension $700 and then you would have to add wheels and tires. The point is, im sure much of the costs could have been fudged. for example, that cage anyone could have weleded up.

2:10 at Thunderhill in its first race and thats with stock 79 brakes and mintex pads. (cheap). With the bigger S brakes, it surely would have lasted the 24 hours, but S4 brakes might be needed to change the pads quickly.

Im sure you wouldnt need anything else to make it a very competitive car in this event. Heck, it would even be competitive in the real 25hour Thunderhill event with a little work!

Same applies to the fuel system for the car, I believe even down to the fuel injectors because I had asked the event organizer about this earlier this year.

Other nice thing is you can buy a $2k car and if you sell off $1500 in parts then you end up with a $500 car within the rules. This is something I wish we had better understood before we went out and bought a sub-$500 Volvo to use for Lemons. Looking back when I sold my 1984 928S euro for $2400ish a few years back I am pretty confident I could have gotten $2k out of parts off the car and still had a running vehicle for Lemons. I actually think that is a better route to go in hopes of getting a car hopefully more capable of lasting through the race without major breakage. Although just is not completely within the spirit of the race but definitely how you see a lot of the types of the cars racing without lap penalties.

Good luck with the project, I had been thinking about doing a 928 for it for the past 6 months. My partner in crime on this though wants to use this Volvo since it is already in owned and stripped. Our biggest obstacle has been finding other people willing to join in on this and share some of the cost to prep and race. Plenty of people want to join if they do not have to spend a dime or anything beyond their own safety gear though. We actually would have raced in the Houston event this past October but the driver issue during the summer created an extended period of lack of interest. Probably will race in either an out of state event in 09 or the second Houston race in 09.

There are now 12-13 such "races" scheduled all over the country ...

We would be lucky to get ready for the race in April at Kershaw SC. The entry fee is due in January, but you need a team and car together - We don't have either yet - Wally, Shawn, and I are driving so far -and you need 4 to 6.

I think realistically aiming for Belle Rose, La in June, and SC in September, is more in line - hopefully we will have a car, and a team!
I am finding out that I can legally use either '78 Euro.
My choice has yet to be made. The deciding factor will be how much work the engine requires on the auto.

Well - your record with the '79 is safe - I only have two '78's.
We'll see how fast they will be with some prep work.
I have been warned that the dumpster diving can be even more competitive.

With four of us it worked out real well. They split the race into two 8-hour sessions on Saturday and Sunday, so running 2-hour stints worked out perfectly. I will say having camelbacks and coolshirts made running 2 hours MUCH easier. With more than that, you won't get as much seat time, especially if you have running problems. We're starting work to prep for the April race now, but I'm happy to help out. They ran the "West Course" last time and I expect they will do the same again, adding a very serious chicane on the front straight. Serious meaning slow waaaaay down, single-file only and if you touched it was an automatic black flag. It was also built from about 200 tires, so hitting it was not a good idea at all...didn't stop a couple folks from trying though.

We'll be paddocked on the front straight, right about pit-in. Great place to spectate too.

Thanks Mark - I'm headed to the race with or without the car.
We might have a crew and car ready in time yet - it is still a month away 'till deadline.
I was just saying I'm sure we will make the other two - I only have doubts about the first one as we are just in the learning stage - "baby steps"

Mike, I spoke with Tarek. He is interested but wants to talk about it more with you. Maybe we can get together soon to hash everything out.

So, a question to you racers and veteran Lemoniers. What should we expect when it comes to tire and brake wear? If we use a street tire would we be able to get through the whole event on one set? What about the brake pads? Any idea of how many laps we should see in a 24 hour stint at the SC track?

Winner did just over 500 laps last time, we did somewhat less. We used Hawk blues and didn't need the spare set at all, very little pad wear...but then our car is a bit lighter than a 928. As for tires, Falken Azenis are good, we ended up with Hankooks and they were great. You have a minimum tire compound rule, 190 I think. The Hankooks had great wear and grip, only problem we had was a cut tire when someone bumped us. There's no way you should run out of pad or tire in this event. But spares are always a good idea.

OK, between your new avatar and this post, I think I may have figured out who was posting as Sidehatch.

BTW, I think we have secured a donation of some expired 5 point harness'. I'll keep you posted.
