No luck seeing Death Valley. It was almost 5:00 P.M. when we left Lee Vining so I knew it would be dark soon. I think we were just in time because the snow was moving in. You can see in the picture below why they closed the roads in Yosemite. There was no snow in these mountains the day before.

The people in Lee Vining were as helpful and nice as they could be. By the time we left, everyone in town knew us as the people with the broken down Porsche.

We took the quickest route according to the GPS which took us down 395 - 168 - 266 - 95. Ca. Road #168 was an experience in itself. I thought the roads around the NC mountains were curvy. This road put me to work. Too bad we couldn't see the landscape around us in the dark.

Hwy 95 was the exact opposite with straights that went on forever. The car is smooth as silk up to 120 mph. We'll see how she does at higher speeds in the daytime when I can see what's up ahead. So far the V1 has saved my *** twice.

Now it's off the the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.

PS: I just looked at the map again and could bite myself... There is a 928 owner in Bishop, but I did not realize it is that close to where you got stuck. But then again, I doubt he has an LH brain sitting on his shelf...

We made it to the Grand Canyon. The car is still running great. We spent a while in Vegas visiting with Gina's aunt that she hasn't seen in twenty years or so. No internet service at the hotel last night but it's working this morning although it's slow as molasses. We're off to check out the canyon and then to the Painted Desert and Gallup, New Mexico.

It just dawned on me last night that we won't be in OKC until Monday thanks to our unscheduled stay in Lee Vinings. Anyone able to meet in OKC on Monday? I'll send a PM to JWise and RKD. Sorry for the multiple schedule changes.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make OKC on Monday. I have one, possibly two, loan closings scheduled tomorrow (yes, contrary to what you hear in the news, commercial bankers still making new loans do exist )

I drove highway 168 last summer on a one day drive from Reno to Vegas. highway 168 was the highlight. It's a very twisty, dips and rise road through the Bristlecone Pine Forest. In places it narrows to a single lane through rock outcroppings, so you can't drive too fast. One of the most fun driving experiences ever. Plus, as you head east, once you get out of the twisties you open up on a dead straight, slightly descending stretch where you can see for at least 12 miles ahead of you. And there are no other cars around. I got my rental Suzuki up to about 95, so I can only imagine what a 928 could do.

Sounds like a great sightseeing trip, Mike. I'm happy to hear the car is running well and you're taking your time to see the sights. Good luck the rest of the way.

I know you now have limited time - see the Petrified Forest if you can - I'd rank it over Painted Desert if you have limited time - its very close the the freeway and you can see just a little quickly or spend more time. If the weather isn't great (grey overcast) the Painted Desert looks significantly less painted....

We're in Albuquerque. We galluped past Gallup (sorry, couldn't resist) just to put a few more miles behind us. We saw The Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest and Painted Desert all in one day. Amazing stuff!!! I'll post pics in a little while. Gotta get some food.

I'm envious! Sounds like a trip of a lifetime and some incredible scenery. IMHO you are experiencing one of the best ways to see the US.

Well, I just got home from meeting Mike and Gina this evening for some liquid refreshment. I'm happy to report they made it safely to Tulsa, and Mike reports the car is running great.

Ditto and +1 here in OKC. Great meeting Mike and Gina over some Bud & Rita. Now I have a couple more reasons to try to make Sharks in the Mountains.

Did chase with Mike's beauty across OKC to see he safely made it to the Turnpike for Tulsa. Does having 928 headlights quickly pulling up behind remind anyone else of the railroad tracks scene in Close Encounters?

We made it home.
We made up for our lost day in Lee Vinings by driving straight thru from Tulsa. It only took 11 hours even with having to weave through half a million 18 wheelers and hitting Nashville at rush hour. The V1 saved my *** more times than I can count. Johnny was out in force in Tennessee.

Time to call it a day. Back to work tomorrow.

I'm glad to be home but a little bummed that it's over. I'm ready to go again.
