Something easy to check: Some MY (like my 86.5 have) have 2 cable connections onto the positive battery post. They secure onto the post with separate nuts. A stop-no-start situation requiring 2 tows was solved when I bothered to check the battery connections for firmness. Improperly secured connections at the battery post didn't prevent cranking, but quite upset the LH computer. I assume you've looked at the battery connections?

Did you get to see much of Death Valley, or was it already getting dark when you crossed through? I hope you had an interesting drive.
