Sounds like you plan to come across I40..? Are you planning a side trip to the Grand Canyon? Swing an extra day if you can - it will be worth it. See if you can stay the night at the El Tovar lodge - best place at the South Rim (get dinner reservations there too).

Other places of interest nearby are some kitschy old Route 66 locations in Williams, Flagstaff old town also has some good restaurants. Lowell observatory is interesting to the science nuts. Check out Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki National Monument, Meteor Crater, Painted Desert & Petrified Forest - all quite close to I40. Of course if you are an Eagles Fan don't miss 'The Corner' in Winslow Arizona - now a city park.

If you can spare more time - take a loop south from Flagsaff through Oak Creek to the red rock country of Sedona & back - fantastic scenery. In Oak Creek this time of year the fall colors are spectacular... take a short hike on the West Fork of Oak Creek Trail from the Call of the Canyon trailhead alongside Oak Creek..

Yes, per Wikipedia, that's the case in California and Minnesota. Illegal outright in Virginia and DC.

Otherwise, you should be good to go!

Wednesday, we'll be criuising the 17 Mile Drive with Nicole, Bill and hopefully meeting Steve (svp928) and then heading north on Coast Dr./Hwy 1 to Big Basin Redwood Park and Santa Cruz.
Thursday morning we're off to Vegas, baaabyyyy.
Friday morning we check out the Hoover Dam and head to the Grand Canyon where we stay the night.
Saturday, it's off to Gallup, NM. stopping by Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forest on the way.
Sunday we're up early to head to OKC to meet RKD, JW and hopefully a few others.
Monday, it's Forrest City, Ar. and then home Tuesday.
I'm exhausted already but really looking forward to it.

The first day of our adventure is behind us and a great day it was. Nicole and Bill met us at the lot as planned. We spent most of the day in Monterey cruising the 17 Mile Drive and checking out Carmel before traffic got in the way and we had to go our separate ways. This area is spectacular. I wish we had more time to spend here and with Bill and Nicole.

The car is better than expected. It looks great and runs even better. No service records but it appears to be extremely well maintained and completely stock except for a nice and tastefully done aftermarket stereo and alarm/keyless entry that actually works.

This was one of those rare eBay adds that described the car accurately. The folks at Mohr Imports are top notch and I recommend them highly. They've got an impressive inventory if you're in the market.

Meeting Bill and Nicole just further confirmed what I've experienced since I joined this 928 family. Everyone I've met has been just awesome. I've never met a friendlier group of people, not even close. I'm sure there are a**holes with 928s out there somewhere but I haven't met them. Sorry for being mushy but it just amazes me and I had to say it. I know I'm not the only one that's noticed.

I'm glad you enjoyed Cafe Fina, our tour around Pacific Grove and 17-Mile-Drive, and our short stop in Carmel. As I said, there is so much more to see in the area - I wish there was more time.

Please keep us updated on the rest of your trip! I'm particularly curious about your drive through Yosemite, but also hope you'll enjoy Mono Lake, and Death Valley. That's lot of driving in one day...

Don't forget your Valentine, and try to keep it under 100! (well, I only say the latter as an alibi...LOL!)

Be prepared for c-c-c-cold. I took the Death Valley drive on my way back to Maryland last year in late June and it was a chilly experience in the morning hours. very nice/fun drive descending below sea level. Make a point of stopping by the Grand Canyon if possible. That's like a trip to the moon, you have to take the opportunities offered.

I had the most unexpected event of the trip in the Arizona desert.

BEWARE: the fuel vapor recirc charcoal canisters on these cars are typically clogged up as well as some of the vapor lines (filled with charcoal). While filling up just south of the Grand Canyon park, I spun the tank filler cap off and gas spewed out of the tank a good yard's distance, showing no sign of abatement for the second and a half that I needed to overcome shock and jamb the cap back on. The tank/filler cap hissed furiously for half a minute, as I let pressure more gracefully dissipate. IT doesn't matter how hot you feel...in the desert, the tank gets plenty hot, so plan to let pressure escape in a controlled fashion. When you get back, take a bit of time to have the vapor recirc canister and hose checked for operation.

Enjoy the trip! I miss the experience already.

 

Oh, BTW: Little known secret outside of Arkansas. Plan to stay at the Petite Jean State Park Lodge just northwest of Little Rock. Hard to describe, other than the park is just short of a spiritual experience. You'll know what I mean when you arrive. My teen age son stayed with me during our cross country trip and it met with his approval. This year I stayed with my oldest son, while he was on leave from Baghdad. He insisted on staying an extra day. Make reservations.....plan on staying.

 

Mike, I am sorry to have missed you and Bill and Nicole- glad the car drives as well as it should! Have fun on the ride home...
