My passenger side door strip was falling off, so I took it off to put new double-sided tape in. In the process, I ended up deleting all of them!

You can't tell from a few feet away.

I used fishing line to saw through the double sided tape where it was still good. The place where I bought the car had used a thick layer of rubber cement to glue the passenger side strip on. It took all afternoon with adhesive remover and cotton ***** to get it off the door.

I was lucky that all the paint is original. I did have to use some rubbing compound on the drivers side, because the tape had yellowed the top layer of paint, but it only took a little scrubbing to get to good paint.

The plugs are hardware store nylon pop-in hole plugs (Home Depot too), (10) 3/8", and (2) 3/16", which come in white or black. I used touch-up paint on them, and I put a little bit of paint behind the plugs to hold them.

Grand total? $6.00!

11mm or 7/16 hole plugs would be better than 3/8", if they make 'em.

One thing I'm looking for is decent looking aftermarket, or other OEM thin rubstrips. ~10mm or so wide, and only a few mm's high.

Instead of going the entire length of the old strip, I was thinking of front and rear strips, 24" at the rear, and 15" at the front, to cover the holes. The main part of the door would be clear.

I got tired of door dings on my 968 so I added door strips (stock). I went to a body shop and got their industrial grade double sided tape (not cheap) and it sticks so tight I don't think I could ever get it off w/o messing something up. I hated to put them on but strips are better looking than door dings.

I just read on here somewhere how someone used fishing line (I think) to remove the rub strips on their 928 and I was going to try it on my S4.

My paint is just beat enough that I was thinking it wouldn't really matter if it didn't come out perfect, but wow, your's looks great.

And I was going to have my car detailed by a pro guy near me that comes highly recommended. He said no problem to bring my red paint back to life.

Very cool, I'm totally psyched.

And putting rub strips back on? Please say it ain't so. Even if they are mini ones.

For the rub strip users, I don't understand the benefit. They barely offer any coverage, and they look like hell, completely ruin the flowing lines of the car.

I never had a single problem with my rub strip delete '85 and drove it as my daily driver for the 1.5 yrs when I had it. Was always careful where I parked, and no problems.

I guess I can't get past the idea that they would actually do anything to protect the car with all of the SUV's and varying hieghts of all the doors, the different door shapes etc.

Couple more notes:

The post at the end of the door is a threaded rod, and there's a (rusty) nut under the rubber seal that has to be removed. It looked horribly rusty, but I used a pair of dykes to unscrew it.

To make room for the fishing line, jam toothpicks through about 2" in from the ends.

Go slowly. The fishing line can leave marks if you 'saw' too aggressively.

Hmm, not sure we have many dykes around here, but I have seen some pretty butch chicks around from time to time. I'll have to make some inquires.

Never heard about using them butch chicks on pulling rusty rods. Now I know.

Cool rub strip delete. Those stubborn double sided body molding tape can be
a real bear to fight.
