I've found that you simply can't put something on a pallet and expect UPS to deliver it undamaged, you must place the item INSIDE a wooden crate. Been there done that.

Chances are the pallet got damaged and perhaps let the straps loosen, I would be very surprised if the actual transmission was harmed.

there was also a few sections of folded up cardboard around it and about 6 folds of bubblewrap on the CV flange areas.

The straps that were on there could not come off without tampering. I use straps like this and larger ones in the field all the time, they NEVER come undone even when landing hard and heavy with a helicopter.

If the package is damaged and we do an insurance claim on it I will be getting the carcass back to remove sections from it.

each his own, but that isnt "nicely packed" all that thing has to do is roll over and you run the chance of cracking the case! The top half should have been framed perhaps? I hope it works out.

I hate shippers, all of them. It's not that difficult to use a little care in handling freight, whether if its with a fork lift, a pallet jack, or hands on. Totally stupid that our stuff is getting damaged and/or lost in transit.

Actually, being a UPS freight handler is a pretty well paying and somewhat highly sought after job here in the U.S. They don't emply cheap imported labor as far as I know.

Shipping heavy items is tricky if you are using UPS or FedEx. They are usually not used to handling overly heavy items and will mishandle the item. A freight company such as AAA Cooper, Gator, Estes etc will do a much better job with pallet sized items.

For future reference I have my local Ups shipper store package anything that can be damaged and is not replaceable. This way the "not packaged correctly" goes to the store and they will pay for it. It cost a little more but as you can see well worth it.

+1

I had them pack my heads for this exact reason, and insured for $1,000.

I actually tried to have the store package it up here, they wouldnt do it.

And if it rolled over it wouldnt have been damaged as I had layers of cardboard on top of the tranny to prevent damage for that specific reason.

I've been through this with UPS before when an amp I bought on eBay got trashed in shipping - they may try to return it to the sender as that is who paid the insurance. It can get pretty ugly... I got stuck with no amp and no insurance payment - both were sent to the eBay seller/shipper.

You never know what can happen - maybe the UPS truck got hit by a train, destroying every carefully-packaged item in it.

What a misery...
UPS will not talk to me, they will only talk to the sender.
I spoke to Colin and he hasn't been able to get much info either.
But apparently a claim has been filed and the box is already in a claims department.
If I didn't know Colin from Rennlist, that would leave me in a pretty bad spot as the buyer.

Looks like I am looking for a gearbox again.
Anyone has a 5 speed LSD box laying around?

What I've found is that UPS does not recongnize (and they acknowledge this on their website) any special labeling or stickers affixed to the outside of the package. Fragile, this end up, handle with care stickers are by policy ignored by UPS. It clearly states DO NOT STACK on the outside of the package, but it has no bearing on how UPS will handle this package.

Was this classified as a freight or package shipment? They may argue you didn't utilize a standard pallet. They may also point out that when you ship a package with them, they recognize no up or downside on the package. Heavy items could've been stacked on top of the transmission, or the transmission stacked on top of several items and caused those packages below to collapse. It's hard to say.

Could be the only damage is to the pallet you made too.

OK, I'll take it.
I just need to get the funds back from UPS and I'll buy it.
Please give me a good price.

Sab, UPS will give the insurance money to the sender (you are no one to them), then you have to get it from him.
