PorKen, that LED idea has some meritt. I may even play with that this weekend. There was a post about a week ago that used led bars in the dash cluster. That site is here http://www.ledlightingsystemsinc.com/ . Use a couple of their bars with a steel frame like you said and a new lens. Might work as well. I like this brain storming. Sometimes groups work well that way.....go figure.

I'm glad some of you are running with the idea. As I mentioned, I did contact the place that makes the Altezza "ricer" lights, to see if they would be willing to make something for us. They have hundreds of different models, for all kinds of cars, so it seems like they have the process down pat. And it is really cool that you guys are persuing some of your own designs as well. If someone can get the parts made, people will buy them. So CAD away!

My personal plan, is to make a mold of the "wasted space" between the light and the bumper. Then I can make a clear or smoked lens out of plexiglass or a similar plastic. Using the trick of making a solid mold out of plaster, and then laying the plastic over it, and tossing it in the oven. A little trimming, and it's ready to go.

Then, as far as the lights, I plan on basicaly modifying the stock lens, to set three round 3" LED cluster lights into the lens. Then I will probably fill in the areas around the new lights with bondo or something, to make the lights flush, or perhaps recessed. Then I will paint the surrounding area black, or body color. Then mount the clear or tinted lens over that... Or I may forgo the lens, if the lights look cool on their own...

Now for those projector headlights...

Now theres a cool thing! I like that insert. Can the lense be remove to paint the silver part the color of the car? Do HID Xenon need to be used?

Yeah...

Jacquemond has some, and Spyderwerks does...

But they are all like $1,500.
I can easily make something myself for much less... Besides, I want them integrated into the fender, not as a headlight replacement...

I know, you all *love* the 928 headlights...
I'm a freak, and I like very exotic looking cars.
So by the time I am done messing with my car, I am sure it will horrify most of you...

IMHO..of course

If im going to change the style/lighting of my rear lights, any design that i will cosider will have to be BRIGHTER. When you put "enclosures" vinyl tape etc etc..over the lights you have to be reducing the amount of light being emitted.

Somethng to consider for the earlier cars that dont have a 3rd brake light. Many times you need as much RED light shining in the guys face behind you as you can to get their attention.

I would like to see an brighter set up...LED perhaps in the main leneses and the 3rd brake light. Then after that, an updated style: clear lenses..etc etc.

When I lived in Minneapolis (up to about a year ago) I remember occasionally seeing this incredible looking car I could not identify - it looked Porsche, but I couldn't quite place it.
I now know that was the grey Spiderwerks 928 pictured on the site linked above....Amazing car to see in person!

Here's a bit of a concept:

I think it would look better with a red lens over the red part, perhaps a frosted white lens over the blinker part, a horizontal orientation, and installed in a prettier car than this.

This other post has a picture of what seems to be the easiest and still rather sexy taillight treatment. Still haven't gotten an answer as to whether it's real or Photoshopped, though it looks rather real.

Quaz, LED fans -

This fellow has started thinking along the same lines...Link: Mitsubishi 3000GT led conversion

Also:
I was at Fry's this weekend, and saw some 12v mini flourescent tubes and drivers. They ranged in length from 2" to 9" or so, by 1/4". The drivers could power up to two bulbs each.
I don't know how these perform, ie. how fast they light, but it might work for the reverse; instead of white LED's which are the most expensive.

PorKen:

Where did you find that weird 911 conversion? Looks like someone tried to get it ready for the Rallye Paris-Dakar. It doesn't have the gracefulnes of a Porsche anymore. But that applies to the Cayenne as well.

Now, these guys in the background look even scarier than the car...

Nicole - that's the front to the LED taillight that 944Play posted, above.

Here's the link again to the full picture session, it's weird.
