Tail Light Concepts

OK BC don't kill me ... but ....
I have both S4 and S. And I like both. I really agree that the way it was supposed to originally be, was the S4 look. However, IMHO the S look has come into its own and become a real classic. Dated? Yes. Absolutely. And that is what makes this look so unique. Ever seen it anywhere? Nope. However .... the S4 .... seen those before? Well yes ... Lexus copied it, then Nissan, then Toyota, then GM, then the rest of the word .... right now, the S4 lights can be seen on almost all new cars. <yawn> ....... Don't S4-ify your S. Get an S4 in addition

heinrich,
The original designs didn't have a spoiler, but the early wind tunnel tests, and during road testing, there were versions with S type spoilers.
Check out the whale tale:

I think the S1 and S4 were competing designs. The earliest sketches have both a smooth bumper and an inset bumper design:
I like the inset. But I like the split light.
How about an LED version of the sketch split with square reverse? I'll try and photoshop it.

Ken I had missed that :-) ... very true. I think it was originally done at the time the ducktail was being made for the 911, or thereabouts ... I'm still SOOO tempted to delete both my cars' rear apron (spoiler) though

I really like the really thin version of the lights on the concept drawing.
Something like that, with LED lights, would be very cool.
And Porken, that is the basic idea, but with the lenses extending out to the edges of the bumper.
Something like you show, would not be too hard to make. But ones that go out to the edge,
would really help to emulate the s4, without having to redo the whole rear bumper cover...

If someone could actually make lights like those which were flush with the bumper as BC suggests, they would definitely have my money.
And Heinrich should be happy too- as a simple bolt-on, it would be easy to return to that retro '70s look :-)

heinrich,
Thanks. I thought it might look cool, but after I was more than half done, I could tell that the upper one looks like an old RX7! Blah!
...
Anyhu, it did give me a chance to brush up on my mad photoshop skillz:

I happen to love the old taillights. Minimalist, functional. I think the look of the taillights prompted some of the people that have talked to me about the car to ask how old it is. That's the part I love... watching people's jaws drop when they find out the car is 26 years old.
