I agree about the '70s tail-lights. they're the only part of my '86.5's looks that I don't love. So... does anybody know what ever happened to this idea? Did anyone ever make an LED like in Ken's picture above? (I personally preferred the flush look, even if they were a bit 'large'). I have money in my wallet for this. Anyone... anyone?

Here would be the best idea:

S4 look, for the s2's, without removing the rear bumper cover.
Remove your s2 lights, and add a new lens cover, that goes out flush with the bumper cover,
and include longer screws, so it just screws into the existing mounting holes...
The main thing is getting the light cover flush with the bumper cover...

I have a different perspective. If you care .... then the tail lights are waht set the ob look apart. I get very few looks in my S4's ... but the classic "Risky Business" look S ... lots and lots of attention. Night and day. I think it's because it truly looks dated. Whereas the S4 looks like any other new car. Now. ...... Change the tail lights, change the entire look.

Forgot to add, the dated look adds to the mystique, ie you can very clearly see the car is from the 70's - same as other supercars from that era. So ... people look and are amazed.

Yeah, the Jacquemond lights...

There are a lot of ways to change the lights, if you switch to a fiberglass rear bumper.
You can mount round lights, s4 lights, LEDs, almost anything.

But what some OB owners want, is a quick and easy way to update their cars to a newer look.

And I agree also, that the OBs are seen as a classic, and some people appreciate them as they are.
It all depends if you want a classic, or if you want something modern...
If I wanted a classic, I'd be driving a '33 Ford, or '69 Camaro or something...
I like the 928 because it looks futuristic and modern.
(Except for the tail-lights...)

THanks Ken yes ... notice the clear absence of the spoiler. Also notice it was designed as an S4 but there was no way anyone in the world in 1977 could builds lights or bumpers like those so they waited till 1986 when there was a process to do as they had originally designed it ....

Additionally I wish they had not narrowed the car ... it looked awesome as designed.

Btw ... If Porsche took those concept sketches *today* and simply manufactured a new 928 based on that ..... it would be a huge success. Agreed?

I'm bettin' that someone here will know the exact reason, but I recall reading something that indicated they had to narrow the body in order to conform to european garage sizes/parking space sizes, or some such.

The top right image is really nice.
That would look amazing.
Slightly rounded, yet slightly angular as well.

[QUOTE=Nicole]I can't help it, but to me the suggestions shown just demonstrate what a great job Porsche did initially.

The biggest mystery to me is why we suddenly have to cram round lenses into shapes that aren't round. Many of the new rice and chrome tail lights look like "home made" to me. Or maybe I'm getting too old to understand that look...

Nicole,

The 'round' theme of the taillight lenses is generally to make the cars assimilate the look of both Corvette and Ferrari which use round taillights as a styling mark. Similar to the BMW twin oval grill, and the bulbous nosecone of the Dodge trucks after 1997. Corvette deviated slightly with almond shapes, and Ferrari has also deviated in some few examples, but that's the most likely justification.

I agree with you completely on this. The round lenses in an oblong cutout look like.....'round lenses in an oblong cutout'. It absolutely screams JC Whitney to me. Having said that, I kinda like the round lense look, but not for this(sic 928) car.

Round or not, the recessed look of the early cars looks dated.
It's very 70's.

Most new cars have flush-mounted tail-lights, regardless of the shape.
They can be square, round, LED, whatever.
But they are all flush with the body.

We are mainly talking about updating the older cars.

The ideal answer is s4 lights.
But that requires a swap of bumper covers, lights, hardware, and a repaint.
I think a lot of owners of older 928s would be pretty happy to see a new
lens, that can replace the stock lens, but extends outward to sit flush
with the bumper. Something that looks like the s4. Or something rice.
Either way, getting it flush with the rear is the goal...

I agree that the round lights are an attempt to emulate Ferarri.
Either on Corvettes or on the Jacquemond car, rice lights, Supra, etc...
