Great write ups & fotos
When I did mine i had read so much about this problem that I tapered a couple of old bolts with a grinder & banged them in on the "wrong" side with a hammer, then I could just push the correct bolts in on the right side.

Yes, having the engine out was a great help to get things cleaned up. When I had the engine out, I let the machine shop clean the block and heads. I disassembled the block, kept the crank at home and sent the 'chunk aluminum' to the shop for a cleaning. For the rest, I cleaned at home. Most of the nuts, bolts and washers and plastic parts and painted metal parts, I used Orange Blast - a citrus cleaner I got at Wal-Mart. For caked on grease and grime on metal parts (not painted), I used carb cleaner. Used a wire brush on a lot of metal, non-painted parts and nylon brushes on soft parts. I also purchased some sheet plastic and a small kiddie pool to do the cleaning to keep the overspray off the concrete. Cleaning did take a significant amount of time.
Thanks for the post and for the question!
BTW, I'm a fan of the NW, I visit there at least 3 times a year!
