Long time reader, first time poster!

Have been reading here for some time, and have to say that these forums are awesome. So thanks in advance for all the help and guidance you guys will lend in the years to come! (questions are numbered at the bottom)

Have been looking at few 928s in the Metroplex for the last few months and finally took the plunge! This is my first porsche. I see you guys smiling already! Even with all the research and reading I have done, not sure I know what I have gotten myself into!

Finally settled in on an 84, red (not my first choice no doubt) with 72K miles on it and an automatic. Has rub rails and sunroof. Origional owner and decent maintaince records. My real concern was that the car had barely been driven over the last 10 years. The up side is that it has always been garaged. No, he did not up charge me for the 1/2" of dust that we blew off with the air compressor.

Its a little rough around the edges. Nothing like the $2500 cars that have changed hands 100 times. But not mint either. No rust, paint needs buffed. Red most times will really polish up nice, and I think this one will be presentable for a weekend driver. Has a few ***** cracked, ect. Good start for my first one. My intention is for my son and I to work on it (from what I read alot!) and take it for a spin on the weekends.

Have not driven the car a ton, as I would like to get it cleaned up and a few things fixed before driving it to much.

Had a few questions, read through the pinned message and did a search for my issues but did not find what I needed. :

1. Has a miss at idle. Enought that you feel the car move a bit. Only place I have noticed it is setting at a red light in gear. Dont notice it in neutral or Park as it sets and idles. Does not seem to do it at a stop sign as I dont think I sit still long enough. My guess is maybe a tuneup is in order. Cap, rotor, wires and plugs? Weird to me that it seems to be an intermittent problem though. I would think if it was wire, it would miss all the time?
2. Stock bosch plugs the best for these cars? Stock calls for WR8DS. Im an old school small block chevy guy. Im not sold on all the platinum, splitfire junk. I know these cars are quirky, and if you guys have had great luck with something besides stock, have no problem giving them a try. Bosch or Beru wires, cap, ect?
3. Dash illumination lights are very dim. Dial under dash does nothing except turn real hard. Messed with it again last night, and they went out for a while, along with shift indicator light. Had to adjust the tilt to get them to come back on. Is there a harness somewhere that cold be worked loose? Since the shifte light went out along with the dash lights, that seems to be wiring.
4. Has a bit of a shake when you get above 80. Feels like wheel out of balance. Going to start there. This may be a really dumb question, but I know that there are issues with alingment once the car has been lifted, and will mangle a set of tires. Not interested in ruining almost new pilots on front! How should I have tire shop lift car and the wheels balanced. Or is it ok for them to lift it (all 4 off the ground) balance each and slap them back on?
5. I run factory OEM filters on my Volvo (mann acutally) and Mitsubishi. Specific filter brand for the 928? I also run Mobil 1 in all my cars, jetskis, ski boat, ect. See no reason why it would hurt this car?

6. Has an option group D96 on the window sticker, cost of that package $3350 what is that? Searched on here and Google but could not find any info.

I plan to look it over some more on Saturday. Will post with more questions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can lift the car to balance the tires or for any other reason, just don't get an alignment done before it settles back on its suspension.

Brad,

You will not have to worry about keeping your car in tip top shape now that you have:
1. Found rennlist,
2. Get to know all of us in the DFW group.

When I had my 84 S back in 2001, I really sweated something going wrong and I would not have the knowledge to fix it. I never found rennlist, and never met anybody else with another shark (besides my brother in-law who had already sold his car and did very little of his own work). All of us chip in our knowledge, experience, and wrenching to keep these cars on the road. I hope you can find time Saturday to drop by and meet the gang. There is usually only 12-15 cars there so its not like you'll have to come meet 100 people, although that is what we are working at.

To try and answer some of your questions. A tune-up will do wonders if the car has indeed been sitting for a while. This also might take some miles to get rid of the flat spots on the tires. Your wheels could be out of balance as you mention. I use the stock Bosch plugs and have had no problems with them. Seem to be just fine for stock engines. We would have to look at the illumination problem. Probably just a bad dimmer wheel/switch thingy.

If you can bring your car Saturday, we are going to go to Roger's house after the get together and have an alignment tech session. Cost is minimal (small donation to help pay for the cost of the tools/equipment/slip plates/camber gauges/ect.) Bring some scrubs to help out if you can. We have several cars (including mine) that are on the list.

The standard (cheap) copper plugs work best look at the cap and rotor. Plugs wires might help to change them out . Oil filters are $6.50 in our store. The dimmer rheostat just by pass it the dash will never be too bright. The 16 valves are real hard to kill . You might want to freshen up all the heater hose cooling hoses check the injector hoses and fuel hoses.....other than that just enjoy !!!!

Kill and all,

Will get some pics as soon as I get it cleaned up.

I will see if wife will let me get away tomorrow. Son has a lacrosse game in the morning, should be done around 10. May run up after that. YOu guys are going to be around till noon correct? Ive been trying not to drive it much untill I go over it good. Runs and drives decent and would love to get your guys opinions so I can hash out a plan of attack to get her in shape. I backed it in the garage and have not really touched it! Not working on it when its 30 degrees outside. Guess im a fair weather shady tree mechanic.

Jim and Ernest thanks for the input.

Again really appreciate you guys helping me out.

I was wrong on the mileage. Its almost 76K. Assume the penalty for that is I got the first round??? Had 58K and car was broke into. Had to have dash and odometer replaced . Its stamped in book on 9/5/89 at 58K by "German Classic Autos" in dallas that it was done. Now has 17K on the new odometer.

I will no doubt bring a change of clothes and got no problem handling a wrench, or broom.

I may run it up today to mill street tire and have travis rebalance the wheels today after work and see if that helps.

Joined yahoo group. So will stay updated with what is going on.

We'll be there unitl noon I suspect unless we leave a little early to start the alignment deal. You are probably about 15-16 miles from Andrew's Restaurant from Coppell depending on which way you go. You could hit 114 and go up and over to I-35W then up to FM 407. Or hit I-35E and then go west on FM407 until it you run into McMakin Road. Take a hard right on to McMakin road. Andrews is on the left about 1.25 miles up the road. I'll PM you my cell phone so that you can call the pit crew if you have any problems on your way. (If you can make it).

I will be at the DFW GTG tomorrow but the alignment session will have to be postponed for a couple of weeks. Sorry about that but I have to take it easy for a few 8>( or Zane will slit my throat.

Randy, man that's cold, the guy just joined at least let him get to ten or so posts.

Blandis, Welcome to the group. The DFW group is a good group. We try to help each other whenever and where ever we can. Like Mike says there is a lot of knowledge spread across the group and we can steer you right. Join us on Saturday with or without the 928. But don't let a little dirt or some rough edges keep you away. All of our cars need some TLC in different areas.

The advice you've gotten above is right on.

Im a newbie so cant say much! Sure all of this will remind me of my days as a pledge!

Mike,

Got your cell phone number, put it in my phone. Going to head home and check all my fluids and fill her up so I can drive it tomorrow.

I will head your guys way soon as we finish up in the morning. Used to live at 407 and McGee (right off 35E). I know where you guys are at! Theres a good Mexican restaurant in that complex. Wife loves their shrimp cocktail.

If im not going to make it I will give you a call. I need to bring anything?

Brad Landis
