Hydraulic Tensioner Console ruined
Hello,
My 1987 S4 has developed an annoying sound during the last ½ year, it sounds like " clack, clack, clack" from the passenger side of the engine.
I changed the rotor and distributor cap but that didn't help.
So this Monday i decided to take the 928 to the nearest authorized Porsche center, and today i got the verdict ... the "Hydraulic Tensioner Console" is ruined.
The tensioner console is approx 7000dkr (1381USD), parts total is 12000 dkr (2368USD) with salary it comes to approx 20000 dkr (3947USD).
Last spring i had the wp/tb , replaced, and this spring i used 3651USD on a service check up.
If anyone has a spare "hydraulic tensioner console" (according to the mechanic) or has a somewhat more affordable source i Europe please let me know (does anyone know the part number ?).
Sincerly
Bernhard

ps this is the same car i got rear ended in this April (and used 5900 USD on paint that the insurance wouldent pay):

What is a hydraulic tensioner "console"? Is it just the belt tensioner itself? If so, get the newer version that PorKen here sells. Even used tensioners should be much cheaper. I'd like to know how your tensioner is "ruined".

The Mechanic said that the tensioner is bolted on to this "console" .. i don't know what it is supposed to be either.

Unless you've got some unknown hybrid version 928, they're likely referring to the basic tensioner. Ask for a list of part numbers they intend to replace and post it here.

Malcolm : the car is at the mechanic 90 miles from here, which prevents me from taking any picture.
Big D: just a normal 1987 928 S4, I'll ask for a list and post it here, at the time i wasn't thinking about that, thanks!

I doubt that an "authorized Porsche center" would install a "Porkens device". But more to the point the tensioner on ALL 928s is mechanical and NOT hydraulic . There is a very good chance that the tensioner was not filled with oil on the last timing belt service . That may have allowed it to rattle. The oil is used to transfer heat from the engine block to the tension so that the cupped shaped washers relax and loosen the belt as the engine expands. 1985 to 1995 cars , it also acts as a shock absorber with a small piston , o ring seal and controlled leak. But it only helps dampen belt flutter but the oil does not increase the tension. Your car probably should have been flashing a belt tension warning light but I think somone may have simply grounded the wire to the engine block to disable the warning. If you do need a tensioner I can supply you a rebuilt unit for $349 plus a $100 core deposit which is refunded when you return your old unit to us. The labor to replace it is similar to doing the timing belt service.

Jim, Thanks for pointing out that the old tensioner is not hydraulic, i got that in my head after reading the post at the pelican parts forum for some reason http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=376583
It's past 5pm over here so ill have to wait till tomorrow morning for getting the list and questioning the mechanic.

I still dont buy that the oil does anything but fight corrosion an transfer heat. ive installed quite a few, modified several to work on cars with mixed year parts and have never seen an problems with them, even with they had not had oil in them. however, one that was jammed from someone putting the wrong year parts together, had the washers all jammed up in the cylinder and it wasnt going to move. however, it did keep tension, but there was no (flexing of he washers to keep tension)
in fact, these washers are so stiff, i dont think there is any way that they act as any type of shock absorber with belt flutter. I mean, its like a direct screw plunger on the tension roller. I could be wrong here, but if you cant push or even lever push, any movement, how does it keep belt flutter down or in controll. Ive been running no oil for 6 years now and many race miles and it seems to be working fine. i figure if its a tension thing due to temp transfer, i wait until the engine is max temp before beating on it.
i do worry about the corrosion, in side as there probably is still reminance of oil, but it has all leaked out due to the seal on the front of the tensioner.
I dont know what that console is, but could they be talking about the block that might have been messed up due to he tensioner bolts coming loose and the tensioner wearing on the block?

is it possible that they are talking about the hydraulic cam chain tensioner under the valve cover.
If it is the factory belt tensioner that is indeed buggered, I do have a used one that worked fine when I took it off, I will send you a PM regarding it.

$4K for replacing a chain tensioner? Interesting theory. Hopefully we'll the parts list tomorrow.

seems about as likely as $4k to replace a tensioner imo, and the chain tensioner is hydraulically operated.
It is possible the tube has to be upgraded to a superceded part, as well there is alot of air pump system lines and hoses in that area which have to be removed and possibly replaced.
Hard to say, I am very curious to see what they say it is as well.
