at this stage, do what i did, replace rings androd bearings. Although i think you already did rod bearings. You can measure your old ring clearance but if your replacing there isnt much reason to.

I disagreee with Brendan that only the 951 rings are useable. i used Goetz 928 rings that have a 2 piece oil control ring. its different from the 3 peice that was stock in my 1990 engine. I am still undecided if its any better or worse though. Just different.

The 2 piece oil control ring is not what you will usually recieve when you purchase "928 piston rings" as you will normally get the 944 na ring pack, with a three piece oil ring of shaky origin, as well as cast compression rings with a very thin and weak looking internal champfer. The 951 rings (Andrew's pictures show shiny faced rings - the ones I am saying would be required for boost) have no internal champfer, and look and feel much more robust - and are only 20 bucks more a set as I recall.

Andrew - you could do with coating those pistons (swain) with PC-9 on the skirts - the sacrificial coating at the direct outer edge where the piston becomes sort of oval is worn away enough that I would do so. Just some advice.

LOL

I'm just waiting for this head-gasket failure to escalate to a back-to-metal respray.

How far can the WYAIT tasks go?

I don't think I'll coat the pistons. If I had a second motor and was just screwing around... well then maybe, but I've kind of drawn a line in the sand at this point... after all, I want to drive this car someday, Brendan . I pulled #7 and everything looks good, so I'll get a couple of new con rod nuts and call it good.

I finished cleaning the driver head last night and tonight I'll be cleaning the passenger head. Then they're off to get welded and decked. If I'm lucky, I'll have everything ready to reassemble during X-mas break.

I might actually have things back together enough to be able to drive in March! That's actually my goal. I want to be driving by Easter.

I love the blue gloves to protect your dainty hands, yet you're still wearing them eating Pizza, as if pepperoni wasn't oily enough on it's own.

Great to see the board pulling together to help.

pulling number 7 gives good peace of mind but im glad your stopping there. however im sure that at some point further down the road you will look back and wish you had pulled the pistons, machined and ceramic coated them and put in 951 rings and cometic head gaskets!!

I thought the GT rings were similar to the 951 rings - i.e. not as brittle as the S4 rings. ANyone in the know?

Now is good time to change upper A arm bushings since they are easy to remove when engine is out.

motor mounts and sump gasket go without saying. poly bushes for the A arms are what you want - it does help under punishing braking to keep the front wheels tracking straight ahead rather than toing out.

Andrew,
Never mix the oil from Pepperoni with the oil from your engine or worse, on your head gasket mating surface! Your engine will blow another gasket or spin a rod bearing.

Tisk tisk! Mixing pizza and porsche engines! Next thing ya know your engine will start smelling like burnt pizza.

Just thought I would throw that in there and lighten things up a bit.
