Default Rear Flex Plate - Clarification needed

I searched but could not find a definitive answer.

The rear flex plate on the auto cars is rivited to the center hub.
Was this ever changed to bolts or did all years have the rivets?

I know there was a Technical Bullitin issued to cover the change but was this after production was complete?

Thanks,
Roger

Most are bolted except for around 1987 then they were riveted for a year or so . The factory fix is to drill out the rivets and use bolts...

Jim,
Thanks and that is what I thought.

Now for the bolt sizes. I am hoping that the bullitin will give the part numbers.
Thanks,
Roger

My wife's 1989 S4 has rivets as did my 1986.5 928S. Maybe Porsche had a run made of these riveted rear flexplates and used them for a period of time, intermittently?

Steve C. should know after all the 928 auto boxes he has serviced.

My 89 S4, which is fairly early in the MY, has bolts.

Just looked at PET, looks like the old 3 speed automatic uses bolts.

M10 x 1.25 x 20

Part Number: 999 217 009 01

But it uses 6 bolts only, my GTS has 8 rivets.

Just took apart a '91, rivets in back, bolts in front.

The reason for the question came up in the garage yesterday. We took apart the '90 (the one with the TT snap) and were replacing the carrier bearings and the flex plate had the rivits.

When we did Mikes '87 he found the posts about taking these out as, from information found someplace we can't replicate, a way to stop some issues. We are now left with the delima of repulling the bearings, grinding out the rivits, and doing the replacement.

We were wondering if any of the later years came with rivited flex plates, because the only thing we could come up with was a shop had just popped in an '87 flex plate when they did the bearings back in '01.

Now we are all really confused.

I think I may just keep it rivited and install as is. I know it's been discussed, that it is the smart thing to do by replacing them...............

I dunno.

Hold on...I retract my claim. I was thinking the peripheral bolts, which, of course, makes no sense as there would be no way to remove the TC cover if there were rivets there. DUH! I haven't seen the center yet.

Justin has been looking through the TSB's and can only find the TT breaking issue, nothing at all about the rivits/bolts issue on the flex plate.

Interesting.
