How much free movement is there between the rear flexplate, and the torque converter center thingamajob? IE. if you have the plate and the converter out of the car, and push on the center of the plate , how far can it travel before it actually touches the converter?

I'm not sure I understand the question Ken, (guess I shouldn't be answering then ).
There's no free movement (fore and aft?) back there that I'm aware off. Are you asking how much the flex plate will flex before its hub contacts the nose of the converter?

Hmmm... (STROKES FU-MAN-CHU BEARD) the front flexplate is made up of two SS leaves sandwiched by the hub, right? Why not make it three, or four?
AFAIK, it could be done in situ.

i can personally vouch for the ruckus that the loose rivets make on the rear flex. my car has loose rivets. i hear it when i start up the car and then more when i turn the car off. I even get some during idle. it is a bit annoying but i havent felt like pulling the tranny. maybe this winter... thanks to mike in dallas for telling me about this at SITM this year when i first pulled up. alls thanks to everyone for putting up helpful info on this particular post
