I've pondered getting into racing in stock classes, but seems a bit pointless. I would have to de-chip my car and I would miss that power. I forget the name of it, but Is Porken's cam advance system legal for stock classes? Hmmmm?

I am not ready to build up a full-on race car to get into GT class racing, but that may need to be my objective when I'm ready. After looking at the proposed rule changes, this may get me out there racing sooner than later.

James go ahead and run the stock class the only time anyone MIGHT protest is if you WIN and frankly that usually takes a while before that might happen...

Well the new rules cut me out of any common class. Why did they have to put the max displacement in there? All that does is stifle creativity and it makes no difference, HP and weight does. What's up with the 6.4 maximum displacement in GT2? If you're going to be doing that to a 5.0 motor anyway, who cares if it's 6.4, 7.4 or whatever. Since this is the Porsche club, shouldn't some mechanical creativity be respected and even encouraged?
Keep in mind that spec racing is boring. Nobody will ever yearn for the good ole days of racing when costs were controlled by preventing ingenuity and all cars were required to be the same.

Well, take a 4.5L and boost it to high heaven, big valves and huge cams, you could do a nice 400rwhp or more. I wonder what the min weight would be, or is there the point in there that there IS NO minimum weight?

PCA is by no means the only game in town. SCCA, NASA, and plenty of competitive regional stuff is what I am planning on with the 78. Because of what I am building, I am out of anything here I think, as it will be a 5.0L with boost.

Mike,

Ignore proposal 2.

Think proposal 1 will come out on top, so build an 8.0l and run in GT1

Prop 1
Performance Index = (Weight/[Displacement x Horsepower/Liter for engine type]) x 100

There are 14 engine types. The weight in the formula includes driver and driver gear. The table below provides the HP/L for your type to calculate the Performance Index for your car:

Engine Type HP/L
4 cyl air cooled 90
4 cyl air cooled turbo 150
6 cyl air cooled 110
6 cyl air cooled turbo 210
4 cyl 2 valve water cooled 100
4 cyl 2 valve water cooled turbo 200
4 cyl 4 valve water cooled 125
4 cyl 4 valve water cooled turbo 230
6 cyl 986-based 135
6 cyl water cooled turbo 240
8 cyl 2 valve 90
8 cyl 2 valve turbo 145
8 cyl 4 valve 100
8 cyl 4 valve turbo 165

Classification is proposed as follows:

Performance Index Class
425 and below GT1
426 to 550 GT2
551 to 675 GT3
676 to 825 GT4
826 to 975 GT5
976 and above GT6

The weight in the formula is the actual weight of the car including driver and all gear. It is permissible to add ballast to change one class only. Ballast is defined as removable weight bolted into the car solely to achieve a target weight.

The only thing I've notice with the tech inspections - if they can find the engine then you have a good tech inspector.

I was performing tech's for the PCA for DE's - being a 928 guy trying to inspect a 911 is probably similar to a 911 guy trying to inspect a 928.

I'm willing to bet if it said Porsche on it - they're probably good with it - then again, if you were to blow by a GT3 - they might take a closer look.

But outside of the PCA DE's I'm limited to SCCA where's they're just happy to have a car on the track.

Ah .... "What's up with the 6.4 maximum displacement in GT2?" perhaps they thought Mark Anderson's 928 engine was a 6.5 instead of a 6.4 It is a conspiracy.

I think the biggest advantage is you can build some high HP 4.7l and 5.0l engines, get the weight down and be competitive in the GT3 field.

It may not be perfect, but the old way a 4.7l 928 was in GT2 along with the 6.4l stroker boys.
I remember RA in 2003, Anderson went by me as if I was driving a Accord! Was real motivation to build the stroker!

I have an idea. maybe what they do is have a restiction on engine displacement modifications for cars running on DOT tires. that way, the GT2/3/4 "S" class could be a place with only minor modifications, and maybe one of those rules would be stock displacement for the platform.
Otherwise, even this rule change doesnt make the 928 any more competitive, as GT3 PCA is almost as fast as GT2 as it stands now. why??? becuase of the weight of the cars.
a 928 can only get so light. at best, the 928 can be 500lbs heavier than a 911 with the same efforts in weight reduction.

You are probably right.

"Run" is not the correct word. Crawl is more like it. I understand there is the DE line and the racing line, then, ahem, my pathetic, whimsical lines. I kid. Actually, take the FUN lines!

Just seems the honor system is better dealt with up front rather than after the fact. Plus some folks mid-pack without a prayer of a podium finish may not appreciate "cheatin" cars getting ahead of them. Them's my kinda people.

Sorry to sidetrack. I'm losing count, but think I've got about 33 track days under my belt, and part of me wants to be suckered into racing.

They are fully aware that "standard" stroker builds are 6.4L, not 6.5L

dpritch,

Can you run an example an the Prop 1 performance index?

Performance Index = (Weight/[Displacement x Horsepower/Liter for engine type]) x 100

Don't "Displacement" and "Liter for engine type" cancel each other out?
