I want to go with a set of aero mirros but can't justify the $500+
One thought is to go with used Miate mirros @ $100 pair shipped for power units. I've seen 2 other sharks with them and they look alright.
I just saw these on ebay. Has any one tried this approach? Not power but might look pretty cool. It's hard to tell from the pic if the angle will be okay. Looks like it only adjust up and down, not on a ball joint.
Here's the link. Googling them brings up mostly VW links for them. Can;t find a pic of them on a car.
Considering what I paid to have my fiberglass rear wing and aero mirrors painted, the parts were a relative bargain.
Not to highjack the thread, but I need to get this done as well... borland, how much did it cost you to paint the wing and mirrors? Was it any special color, or a stock Porsche color?
Hey Ryan, Yea, I've considered getting a GTS replica wing, but have heard stories about poor finish needing a lot of prep, and bolt holes not lining up, etc.
I've read the write up from the 928OC site (IIRC) about prepping a pre GTS wing. Sounds like mostly labor/prep, which I'm hoping I can probably do a lot of. Would love to find a real GTS wing, but if I can't, I still may get a spare pre GTS wing to prep and paint and still have the stock original one if that doesn't go well.
You can use Miata mirrors, Mini Cooper mirrors, Corvette convertable mirrors. I have been paying attention to which cars gave door mounted mirrors as I plan on doing the same. Theres not many cars that use door mounted mirrors anymore.
It was a few years ago, so I don't recall the price I paid for painting. I wanted it done right the first time, so I found a highly recommended custom car painter in Ventura on the recommendation of another local shop (interior shop).
He used BASF Glasuric base coat, mixed to the Porsche paint color code, so it matched the car perfectly. I think just the Glasuric base coat was close to $50 a quart, which is what a only slightly more than he needed. There was also a side molding rub strip that was also done.
Thanks for the link Terra, those are what I had in mind for my racer. I bought a pair and will be glad to post some pics. These and probably most non-original mirrors will require plugging some holes on the door, our doors have a 3 holes that cover a large area.
If your going to install other than factory mirrors, disassembel the door and see where your mounting to, there are doublers inside the door and you will want to mount in this loaction otherwise the door skin will bend very easily , it is made of sheet aluminum
