Whacking the wing?

I always thought the 86.5 and earlier rear bumper covers were more rounded.

Sooooo......Heinrich: Why didn't you delete your spoiler if it was the first thing you wanted to do? Was it because you were like me and was scared that people would think you were crazy by spoiling the look dictated by the award winning "Porsche Design" studio? Or maybe no one would talk to you at PCA or 928 gatherings and would shun you on Rennlist. (I'm trying to transfer some of my personal 928 decision inadequacies to you) I'm actually suprised I haven't been flamed on this post about my thoughts of a wingasectomy on a $4!

I would not drive a 928 at 150mph without the wing in place. There will be too much lift in the back to keep the car stable.
Remember that Porsche even made separate front spoilers for the 996 Carrera 4S and turbo models, which had the same body shapes but different rear spoilers. Porsche said the turbo front spoiler would have thrown the 4s out of balance.

Paul, thanks for the compliment. However, I got carried away in time and added a GTS body colored wing to that car...along with muchos otros chingaderos!!! In the last days of ownership, I had wished that I never put the wing on. I guess I always wanted a GTS, but no matter how much money I threw at that car, it just wouldn't give in. Never the less, it was a beauty!
As for the wingless look on the later cars, I am 50/50 on that. I did see the GTS Richard mentions up at Devek a couple of years ago. It is certainly an awesome look for a GTS. Something I had considered for mine.
I say go for it! Viva le difference!

Two other resons not to mess with aerodynamics:
A German magazine tested high speed handling of the VW Golf versus the New Beetle, which are based on the same platform, with the same suspension set-up. They found that the Beetle was a lot less stable in high speed bends than the Golf.
Similarly, a few people got killed or badly injured in the early Audi TT models because of aerodynamic lift. Audi then had to add a rear spoiler to make the car more stable.

Nicole, if I were going to drive at 150, I'd probably put the wing back on too. I have an Audi TT Turbo and if I remember correctly, early -on the TT had a couple of roll-over fatalities by experienced race-drivers for that same reason; and then Audi slapped a DA (duck-***) spoiler on it. FYI NOTE: Not ALL references to DA on rennlist should be construed as an abbreviation of the celebrated Mr. David Anderson's initials.

Jumping in....
Sorry to jump in on this facsinating thread, but for those who don't drive their Porsches like Porsches (i.e., "at speed") who needs a spoiler or wing? For me, when I'm rushing to court (see my photo on my thread), the car, heavy as it is, needs the aerodynamics provided by both. I didn't think I would ever say my 928 felt "light", but at 160, with stock body, you sneeze, and you're in serious trouble. (translated - no quick movements in steering wheel....). It is still rock steady at speed (high speed....) but I can't imagine running at the speed without the wing.
