In reading the annual service information manuals they continued to improve the 928 each year.
Are the improvements/changes significant enough to want a later model - well in my case it would take a 94 -95 to pique my interest - then only because it would be 7 or 8 years newer.
I am still amazed how well my 928 fulfills my conveyance needs and a few others

The best is 95. From 91 to 95 the interiors are identical.
LastV8, the rear A/C started in 86.5
The S4 and newer really are all good cars. They all had ABS(I know this started in 86.5), 32V engines(I know this started in 85), the autos were all 4 speeds(I know this started in 83), and your resale will be better with the S4 body.
I have had an 83S 5 speed and a 91GT. Both nice cars, but the GT is king.
Good Luck, all 928's are solid, strong cars...
Should never have sold the GT...

I bought a '91 because I think it is the best compromise between a late model and cost. Sure, it does not have the GTS engine and wider rear fenders, but it also does not have that ugly reflective strip between the tail lights...
The '91 has some nice improvements over the previous years, including better sound insulation, HVAC with a "recycling" setting, llighter and higher pressure power steering pump, a better shaped e-brake handle (GT also hs a nicer shaped shifter).
The airbags were standard from '90 on, the electronic instruments from '89 on.
Most important when buying a 928 is a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic who has specific experience with the 928, and a well documented service history.

G, personally I am in LOVE! with my 83 5-speed and feel no need to move to a post-86.5 model. Sure, maybe that will change in a few years, months, or weeks but I do know you can't buy a S4, GT or GTS for $4800 in any decent shape. I know I'm still in the honeymoon stage with my car, but I see no downside to having a 16v car at this point.
As far as performance, even our low-tech (relatively speaking) 16v cars will eat up most anything on the local streets AND you don't see one of our cars every 5 minutes like a Corvette. I bet you are the only 928 roaming around Montevallo.
G, we need to get together sometime soon. I'll be moving back to Alabama next May. Would love to have some of the local shark owners over to my place for a cook-out after we get moved in. If we could time it correctly, the Grand Prix track that the local PCA chapter uses for it's DE events is only 15 miles from our new house.

I've never been in one I liked better, than the one I have......And I bet that is a pretty common sentiment around here.
The better care you give these things, the more rewarding the experience.

RE What's the best M/Y.
That's a highly personal question and I don't know you well enough to confide.
<g>
Now to factual information: rear A/C was available as an option prior to '86. I don't know what is the earliest.
It's also a fact that some people like the sharper lines of the early design better.

Hello all,
This isn't helpful but, It's which ever one your in.
This is a little more helpful.
It depends on what options you Really want.
Say you want the alarm with the flashing door locks. 89 & up.
Say you want a the limited slip. I did. The 90 + cars I think come with it.
You love the flares? Then 93+
I wanted the limited slip in a Bad way. It was easier for me to buy a new one than add that to my 89. I just love the powered over steer, or U turn or 360. If I miss a gate at an autocross, I've already lost, so it's time to have fun.

Mechanical LSD up to and including 1989. PSD (Porsche Sperr Differential I think)...since 1990.
(controlled by brake fluid,pump,clutches??).
A local lister (PacNW) recently added a 2.54 rear and LSD to his 88 AT. He now says the car is ALIVE. Much more fun to drive and when I heard him run around the track at our Track Attack IV in Spokane this past weekend..I believe him... ;-)

We bought a high-mileage '93 GTS some years back and we have not been pleased with the wear of the factory paint. I believe it might have been the first year of the water-based metallic paints, and the clear-coat is coming off in almost all of the horizontal surfaces, i.e. tops of mirrors, rear wing etc. Partially our fault for not "babying" it and keeping it covered all the time, but we have been too busy driving the darn thing!
