Seems everybody is happy with their 928 no matter what year.
Kblair, sadly I bought my 928 as a project car, so far I have never written in a 928. But I accept the offer for a cookout anytime :-)
I got this from autotrader "5 YEAR POWERTRAIN WARRANTY EXPIRES3/1/2007 OR 200,000 MILES,WHO CAN TOP THAT!IN ABSOULTLY MINT CONDITION WITH GARAGED KEPT,RECENT SERVICE,NEEDS NOTHING JUST OUR DOOR TO DOOR DELIVERY WITH OUR EXTEND.WARRANTY" for ike $18000 1990. Just wanted to share :-), not about the price but for the warranty. Its pretty interesting.

Btw, my personal preference would be a DOHC in the shark, 5 spd, maybe 1990 and up (mainly bc brain related failure in early DOHC). Also, I start falling in love with the 1987 and up body styles.

For the price/power combo, it's hard to beat any pre-89 cars.....My personal favourite is my 84 5-speed, followed closely by the 84-86 Euro cars...All of them have bullet-proof motors with very few faults, mainly electrical and interior stuff....
Although most of us drive sharks with AT trannies, I personally will not trade my 5-speed for any pre-89 928 AT out there...The manual tranny feels soooo much more eager to rocket the 928 than most "lazy" ATs, that you really need to floor them before anything happens...
So give me a manual any day and I'll be happy driving ANY 928! As for the later 928GT/GTS cars, my feeling is that yeaaa they are the "cream of the crop", but they're still overpriced..

Goodspeed: Not to belabor the point, but my '85 has rear A/C. I thought it came with the 86.5. As I said, I don't know when the option was first offered, but it is in my '85.
I also believe I read on Phil's site that LSD was introduced in '83. Some guy had one listed on e-bay with LSD and I was going to challenge him, but I found it on 928S4vr. The seller never could produce a picture of the build sticker, but I didn't really want the car for other reasons anyway so I let it pass.

from my experience, most extended warranties/used car warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. Not familiar with the details of that one in autotrader, but as a rule read and re-read both sides of all papers the warranty is written on. Usually, they aren't worth diddly.

87 S4 5 speed, black on black. I sure was sad to let her go.... That was in 1995. Now i'm on the hunt for another shark. Once bitten...... (however that ends..) Actually my *FIRST* love was my dad's gaurds red 85 32v S followed and surpassed by his guards red 87 S4. When he bought his 87, I drove the 85 for a few weeks before he sold it. I was hooked. That was in august of 1986. I was 16 years old and at the time, my own hero.

Hate to disagree with this one but I have seen rear a/c in years back to 84. I for one had the rear a/c interior from (grey-green leather) purchased from 928 International from an 85S.

I'm really enjoying my 88 S4 w/38k although I would like to have the electronic dash, airbag and extra sound insulation that Nicole spoke of. I original almost bought that white 95 GTS but felt they wanted too much in the end. Also since then I've read that 92 and on models had some issues with oil consumption and Porsche had actually replaced at least one that I know.
But I actually like every model as each M/Y has it's own personality.

I love Pattycakes my 82', Auto, Weissach.
Since she is the only sHARk I have, being powered (underpowered) by a 4.5L, 3spd, Auto isn't a Big issue.
I will be an issue someday ... when I eventually add another sHARk to keep the Weissach company.
Frankly, I prefer the pre 87' LOOK. Did the body style change with the 87' or the 86 1/2'?
I would enjoy an engine with 300+ HP as opposed to the 210/220 HP I have now. The brake improvement couldn't hurt, though I must admit I am pleased with mine.
In the end... LOve the one you're with! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I believe the body style change with the 87 MY, but the big brakes were added mid 86.
On that note, was it just the front and rear bumper caps that changed, or was there a change to the hoodline/rear deck line as well? Is it possible to retrofit an 87+ front/rear end to a pre-87 car? Not that I'd want to do that, just wondering.

I have been real happy with my 79. It is still simple enough that I can do all the repair work. Thousand dollar repair bills would take the joy out of owing a hobby car for me. I have had it since it was two years old and it has never been back to the dealer. It was fast in 1979, but is now slow compared to the new ones, but fast enough for me. It still looks as good as any other car on the road in my opinion. All mechanical parts have been competely reliable. Nothing has been replaced with the exception of injectors. I put in a new set of injectors last year just to show the old shark tht I still loved her.

Heck, if I didn't have my 84S (auto) I wouldn't have all those neat tools, ramps, and jackstands in my garage...and my My-T-Vac!
My wife says I can buy my next 928 with her life insurance payout. I'm gonna miss her...
