Thats too funny.....my dad also almost bought a late 60's Cobra...drove one and everything......but didn't want a "convertible that leaked" since he needed to drive it everyday.....the other car he "passed" on was a 1st generation early 911 thats also worth quite a bit now!! He said he didn't fit in the 911 (too tall)....he ended up with a 75 280Z 2+2, since mom insisted on a car with back seats to put me and my sister in!! But in its day that Z was a sweet ride.....still is with a small block in it!

I looked at a new Corvette (08) tonight and was impressed with how far along the build quality has improved. I joined the Corvette Forum and found out some of the lease numbers GMAC is giving right now. I assume most dealers will sell at invoice (mine will) on anything but a Z06 so here are my numbers with a base model (6 speed).
MRSP: $45,285
Invoice: $40,530
Cap Reduction: $10,000 (Down)
Adjust Cap: $30,530
Residual: $26,718
Money Factor: 0.00292
Term: 36 months
Sales Tax: 8.3% (WA)
Depreciation: $3812
Finance Charge: $6018
Total tax: $1646
Total payments: $10,646
Total Cost: $21,476 (12k miles a year)
928S4 (low mile like new condition)
Purchase Price- $20,000 (say 40k miles)
Tax- $1660.00
Maintenance: $2500 per year x 3= $7500
Cost: $29,160
Sale price after 3 years: 928S4 with 76k miles? $13,000
total: $16,160
Plus how much would you earn if you put the extra $10K cash into a investment? say 5% a year? add $1500
Total $17,660
What if you save 3 MPG with the Vette?

I got to be caretaker of this fine beast (340 horse solid lifter red/red 4-speed 4.11 rear '62) for 3 years, it belonged to my wife's boss. I finished the mechanical bits of the restoration and kept it for him when he wasn't interested, which turned out to be most of the time. He sold it to ProTeam at what will likely be the top of the market, at least for a while. I will own a '65 Nassau Blue 327-365 convertible someday.......
On the topic of new Tupperware, the specs on the new '09 ZR-1 are pretty impressive:

and please compare apples to apples.......
a lease is not the same as buying, neither is GM's Smart BUY.
Corvette:
10K down
10K payments
equals $20K and turn it back in when your done (assuming you didn't run over your plan's mileage limits= more money)
928 S4:
$20K buy
$7500 maintenance (your 3 yr #'s---you did say a low mile, clean S4??)
equals $27500 and you keep it
TT&L make no difference as the better fuel mileage with the Vette trumps the lower TT&L cost of the 928
Difference between the two:
about the same, except you keep one--the other you don't, one is new-- the other is 20 years old and has no warranty......
and yes, you forgot one very important number-----insurance. The Vette will cost you a little more......
buy for buy is a different story. Try again.

i'm only speaking of C4's and later. not the real early model vettes.
i've been there done that. they will all become heavy doored rattle traps. riding much like a covered wagon or better yet, a skateboard with steel wheels.
check out the 2009 ZR1.

the mere mention of a vette on this forum SUCKS... i didn't even have enough pride to add the 2 i've owned to my signature.
JUNK !!!!!! nice when new, but will fall slap *** apart soon.

I saw the current Z06 at the Boston Auto show a few weeks ago, the seats leave a LOT to be desired. Like sitting on mush.
If they only had Recaros in there...Every other seat I sat in was better, from econoboxes to BMW.
