Tampa,

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think they're there to hold the bolts in place when you put the pan back in. It's a really tough angle and tight in there, and I think the designers set it up that way for ease of installation. If you put the bolt and insert in place, you can line it up and get the threads started in front, then do one or two in back just to hold it in place, then work your way around.

Whether it was designed that way or not, that's the way I used them and it made it easy for me.

I've never seen one of those inserts.. but that could explain the large bolt holes in the gaskets....

The 87-91 PET shows:

928.101.189.00, dowel sleeve, quantity 2

I don't recall finding them when I replaced the oil pan gasket on my 90' S4.

Porsche sells cork oil pan gaskets with bolt holes for M8 bolts when M6 bolts are required. I believe the gasket I used from 928Intl had a M6 bolt hole, similar to Motorsport's.

I discussed this with Roger, a while back, when he sent me the silicone gasket and we went back and forth about this. He said that Real Gaskets Tennessee made a duplicate of the Porsche part.

See the difference in bolt hole sizes...

Just to clarify further what Borland is pointing out.

I supplied Schocki with the original Porsche stock cork gasket which he sent to Real Gasket and they made an exact copy but in silicone. That is the very gasket in the top picture.
This had been done with a lot of the 911 gaskets already and very succesfull.

The gasket supplied by 928 Motorsports has smaller holes and it may be worth asking Carl why?

I also have found the two rubber inserts (much deteriated) but have no idea why they are there.

Mike,
Good thought process!

Roger

Mike,

I used a floor jack to jack the oil pan up and into position (car on jack stands). Quite easy with the jacking method.

Damn! Out-thunk again!

Actually I was laying on the floor on my back in between the legs of my father's engine hoist, so I don't know if a floor jack would have fit, but it sounds like a better solution than laying it on your chest as I did and then bench pressing it into place.

The inserts do hold the bolts until you're ready to thread them in though whether they're the first or last ones you put in.

i think its for a couple of the bolts that cant make it out of the oil pan, so they made a little wider hole to get a little more angle to get'em out , and the insert fills the gap.
is that what they are for?

The two inserts were put in diagonal corners to align the pan. The theory was that if they used only two holes to align, the rest of the bolts would start without the threads on the bolts hitting the pan holes.

Quick Reply: oil pan rubber iserts on bolts 2 only in front.
