If not a 928 then what?

Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet, Lamborghini Espada V12, Supercharged Stude Avanti. All well under $40k, and I would say comparably priced to a nice GT. All are 2+2 seating, GT cars with some sense of style and modest grunt.

I'd have to go with an 01'-03' Z3 M coupe.
315 Hp
Lotsa SOUL
Almost* more rare than a 928
Ranks #3 on my "best view from rear" list(#2 993 C2S/ C4S, #1 928)
Perf parts up the wazoo
A REAL nice one can be found for $32- $35K
Just my opinion

I'll be the heretic here.
Used Infiniti G35 coupe. Never driven one so I may hate it after a test drive.
Wow. A Saab Sonett II.
I did briefly consider a Ferrari 400. Does that redeem me?
But then I thought about ye olde Ferrari sitting in NYC traffic in summer with AC on . . .
Only got to see one Ferrari 400 in the flesh.
Not a Garden variety F-car.

The driving lights of the Vantage, IMO, improve the AM V8's looks considerably. The Vantage would be near the top of my list. And some of the troublesome rear-end cues are solved when you go with the Volante. But that's probably over 40k.

This might be a strech but the other car I always wanted besides a 928 is a Cobra.
Not a $5,000,000 Cobra but a well done kit with all the modern techno goodies.
It is the kind of ride that turns alot of heads while it plants you in your seat.

Without question I will own one of these, although they won't be imported until 2008(?) when the Evo X arrives:
Say what you want: no class, no pedigree, just a huffed on tin box, blah blah blah, it's okay, I promise to lip read every syllable while looking in my rearview mirror (with three other adults in the car and a full load of groceries in the back.

But if I was buying new (fat chance!) I’d go with the baby Aston Martin “Vantage” as I said in my original post. But that’s still way over the $40k in this thread and even though the 79 Vanquish pictured is listed for $54K (over the cap) I feel it is a reasonable alternative choice to a 928.
Heres the link to the sellers web site: 1978 Aston Martin Vanquish for $54K
IMHO their inventory is a bit over priced. So chances are a similar Aston Martin could be found for less than this one.

Three Wheelin'
1998-02 BMW 540i with a 6 speed and a 78-79 930 turbo. Should be able to get a nice one of each with a few bucks left over for a couple tanks of gas. The Bimmer for daily chores and the 930 for when I gotta behave like a 17 year old.

Friend of mine has a fully restored 65 small block (he owns a Corvette restoration shop) with side pipes and a rock crusher 4-speed. I have yet to drive a more enjoyable car. It just did everything perfect.
I take that back, the Superformance Cobra my father rented for my wedding day topped the vette.

Ferrari 308 Qvalve (or 328 maybe with higher miles?)
Or a car I dreamed about and schemed to get for years through high school and college, but never did...

See that’s the problem – a number’s matching vehicle would be a total waste of time & money for me as I have a bad habit of fiddling with things to make them better.

But for Bang for your Buck – with $40k you could really go crazy with a Factory Five replicar. They have their MKIII, 65 Roadster and a Daytona Coupe that for $40 will blow the doors off of most performance sports cars costing 4 to 20 times as much.
