If not a 928 then what?

I'm defining the question as a comparable "GT", so the Vette is not in there. I haven't driven any of these, but the Audi TT: most boring external panels ever, but performance and interior are in the ballpark; Beamer M series, I assume there are used ones out there under 40K; the new Nissan Z is also in the ballpark; Lexus 430 SC would be the first GT I would look at.

The 993 has a Weissach rear suspension, with strong behavioral roots to the one that your butt now sits on in a 928: couple that with AWD, and my choice was made .... C4S.

Thinking harder on this I was flipping through some of my 928 books & I noticed that there are a number of “usual suspects” that get pitted against the 928.
Besides the Ferrari 308, the Corvette, the 944 and the 911 as has already been mentioned. Some that have also been scrutinized are the Audi Quattro, the Lotus Esprit a number of BMWs (M635, M6 & 850/750) and the Mercedes Benzes (450SL & 420SEC). But next to the Corvette one car seems to pop up more than any other seems to be the Jaguar XJS.
I’ve always liked the XJS – while it ain’t no E-Type. It has good lines & it is a pretty comfy GT. Besides that – it comes with a hatch. The only real grip I have with the Jag however is they can’t be had with a manual – leastways not here in the US. I don’t know about the V12 version, but I understand in the UK you could get the inline SIX with a 5-speed and with a little tweaking it could be a pretty spirited car.

For $40,000 I would buy a base 07 Corvette (LT1) with no added options. The invoice for this car is $39,532 and the MSPR is $44,170.
Here is a base with a automatic,

Prior to trading my in 420SEL (4 door) for the 928, I wanted an 87+ 560 SEC MB with AMG parts (wheels, ground effects).
Kind of like this...but in black.
Second choice would be a MB 500e.

For 40K you would be hard pressed to find a nicer all around ride than a used BMW M5. You think a 928 feels stable at 140-150..my buds 02 M5 feels like you are going 80...at 140...comfortable...every option...plenty of room....three sets of clubs in the trunk.....and pretty stealth...looks like a simple 5 series in the rearview...until 400 horsepower blasts by you....
