I would go for a 996
For $35,000 you could find a low mile 99-2000 with aero kit. There was a really nice silver one on Ebay a month ago with a $37000 BIN, 2 owner car something like 20,000 miles exterior colored center console (which i think is so cool) and full leather with red stitching, real nice car. Real quick, quicker then a GT or GTS manual, 174mph top speed and GT3 looks. Cant beat that. And do try and get a full leather one, otherwise it looks like rubbermade inside.

Here is a stunning beauty for sale locally for $54K.
A 1979 Aston Martin Vantage Silver with a red interior.
Other than that I'd say I've always loved the body of Challengers & Cudas. Almost purchased a triple black 70 Challenger about 7-8 years ago with a 383ci. Almost perfect example but I just couldn't get my finances in order.

No 996's......there's a reason they're dropping like a rock in price, particularly the early ones '99-02's. Unequivically for me, a 993, probably pre-OBDII which means a '95. That would also allow me some $$ for mods.

I was glued as a kid to the Magnum PI series and that 308...the other would perhaps be an older porsche turbo carrera

Back to the M-5...2000 Motor Trend tests has the Bimmer faster 0-60 than a 2000 996...4.7 to 5.1...and the 1/4 also..13.2 at 107.4 996 is 13.53 at 103.20....60-0 is close..117 feet to the 996's 113...the lateral acceleration is even close at .87 to the 996's .91....all this from a car that seats 4 comfortable and has 4x's more cubic feet of cargo capacity and weighs close to 700lbs more...a simple software removal has the M5's top speed in excess of 190MPH...thinking about selling my S4 and the firechicken for one....I was really impressed with it....

Seems I've had this conversation on another forum. Truth is the Vantage styling cues are more the direct derivative of the DBS (67-72) and the DB 4/5s & DB6’s before. So who is coping who?

I know it’s sacrilege for us shark owners to say so and we know it ain’t so, but couldn’t a better case might be made for our 928s being a AMC Pacer knock-off?

There are so many awesome cars out there in the $40k price range it's very hard to choose. At the top for me is a 993, always been a dream car of mine. At times I struggle though as I realize that a Cayman will soon be in the same price range and offers significantly better handling and capabilities.
A friend of mine has the last gen M5 and loves it and actually I have to say I was impressed after going for a spin in one. But I made the realization (after owning the MB 500E) that I need a smaller car with less creature comforts designed with sports rather than sports luxury. Even the basic Cayman is borderline too much.
