I found the Keys4classic web site and see that they can make copies of my key from a picture. I also looked in the archives for this. Is there a place on the car that has the key code? And I only got one key with the car, this seems to be a common problem

My latest S4 only came with one key...the short one. I think the long key is required to activate the alarm. I guess I have no alterntive but to order thru the Porsche dealership?

UPDATE: I WAS A BIY SKEPTICAL BUT PAID MY $35 AND EMAILED KEY FOTOS TO NZ....AND IN LESS THAN A WEEK HAD A DUPLICATE KEY IN MY HANDS THAT WORKS BETTER THAN MY WORN ORIGINAL KEY! UNBELIEVABLE.

I posted about this earlier today. You can get the code from your local Porsche dealer. Not sure if they charge for it.

Your door lock tumblers also have the code on them, which requires pulling the door panel to read. This is harder but better because then you know you have the code that is correct for what is currently in the car.

You can have a key cut by the code but it probably won't work correctly. The best way is find a local locksmith to cut you a key and be able to try it in all the locks.

A key cut from a photo? Haven't heard of that one.

Check with 928 International. They may have your answer.

Actually from what I know, Because of the shape of the Key,Its not flat like a 911 or 944 Key but its a little bit roundish(I know thats not a word) I believe only the factory in Germany can cut the keys. We had people come into the P-car dealer all the time to have keys cut and we couldn't do it. We sent all of the 928 keys Germany to get cut.

Making a copy of the key from a worn key rarely works well. We order new keys from Porsche all the time for our customers. They make a key from the VIN. Never had one not work perfectly. I guess the only time it would not work is if the entire car had the locks changed. Not a common event.

Making keys from photos is possible because there is a finite pattern with only a limted number of possible shapes in each section, and a good photo will allow the locksmith to "decode" your key. That's what the Keys4classics guy does. Nearly everyone here who has tried this service has had good luck with his keys. I had one made and it did not fit all my locks. The tip of my key had more of a bevel than his replacement. Filing the tip of the new key to more closey resemble mine helped a lot but was not perfect. He now bevels the tip. But, like I said, all others have had very good luck with their keys and I can't recall any complaints. Here is a previous discussion about Keys4classics:

The problem with having Porsche cut the key is, even if they make no mistakes, it's expensive, takes a long time, and if the car has been re-keyed you will end up with a useless key.

keys4classics is great. I got a key from them and it works perfect. The key head is not like the original though.

I have messed with keys and the locks a bit. IIRC the tumbler set for the keys is the same length if it is an alarm on non alarm. so maybe the key just has a longer end to activate the alarm switch.

Stewart also sells the original key so you can add the lighted key fob.
I have had about 8 keys made by Keys4Classics and everyone was delivered in a few days and worked. This method is perfect if you only have one key and do not want to give it up.

do a search for tony euganeo here and you'll find his number, if not send me a msg and I'll pm it over to you, he's a former porsche key cutter and has all the equipment to cut your key
he's in PA and turn around is only a couple days, and very reasonable

Mine also came with one key....however if your 928 does not have option 533 (alarm) then it is supposed to only have the short key....the long key is the "alarm" key....

I bought a key blank from "jag graveyard" on ebay for about $20....then I took it to a good local locksmith who used a special cutting tool to make a copy for me....it works great!
