He shouldn't drive, he had a heart attack several months ago and doctor's say he shouldn't drive. If I let him borrow the car he would have another heart attack and I would have a new Shark.

I didn't really plan on racing him, if he wants to go to a track thats fine, I have way more than my fair share of track time.

When I do meet him in person I will offer him a ride.

True. Maybe too early to determine how far this relationship goes, but ALWAYS remember, it's a package deal when you marry anyone; you get the in-laws, etc., etc. That decision may determine what your answer to his "challenge" may be.

My Grandfather's father in law told him he would never be a real man. My grandparents were married for over 50 years.
Let it go. The guy is old and he sees himself being usurped. He would probably like his daughter to tell him what a nice car he has. If you meet him, it would be polite for you to mention what a GREAT car he has. Extra points if you ask him for a ride.

My father in law can be a surly curmudgeon. So can I , but he thinks I'm great. We never argue, and I always listen respecfully. Give the guy a break. He could be dead tommorrow. If you are dating his daughter, at least you know he did one thing right. Be grateful for that. Don't ever make your girlfriend choose between her family and you. Ignore this at your peril.

BTW, you might like driving his Viper. They are kick a$$ cars. One drive and you Will be wanting that SC conversion you keep threatening us with.

Ross
Look at it this way....he is jealous of the fact "his" daughter only talks about you and your car....he thinks he is not #1 anymore in her eyes...which is very hard for a father to take....so he resorts to a childish attack of your car trying to knock you down a bit in her eyes.....pretty sad acutally...but just take it as a compliment..... Another way to look at it...if you end up marrying this girl (in several years) he might have to sell that viper to pay for it!! :>)

I had almost the same thing happen with an ex and her dad, except he was a Corvette guy. It must be tough being a father and watching your daughter talk about some guy and his car all the time when you have a really nice car in the garage that she takes little or no interest in. Odds are he is unfamiliar with the 928. Just start talking cars with him, complement his particular tastes (whether Vipers or Corvettes or whatever), ask him to pop the hood, maybe go for a drive with him then . . . ever so slowly . . .work the 928 into the conversation. Start with some of the basics, front engine, watercooled, all aluminum V8 engine with double overhead cam shafts, 32 valves, 316 HP, 317 ft-lbs, rear transaxle, 50-50 weight distribution, ABS, etc. Once people learn about the car and its history they tend to at least respect it, if not truly appreciate it. And if he doesn't, at least he knows that you know and respect it well.

Dads are funny about their daughters liking anyone or anything but them. Dads that are old and drive sports cars are even funnier.

Murph your car to 500 RWHP and challenge him to a dyno duel. Let him put his money where his mouth is and make it a "winner takes the pinks home."

The traditional sports car was small light weight, rough riding , leaked water into the cabin even IF it had windows, uncomfortable ,no A/C rudimentary heater , often underpowered but was perceived as being FUN some how macho a bit like a motorcycle, life on the edge...So yes the 928 is a sissy car since an S-4 easily comfortably will cruise at 170 mph a/c running no drama at all.

The Viper is a modern day version of what it was designed to emulate the Ford Cobra. Rough and raw with another truck engine. However there is one caviot it has like its predecessor. It was a damn successful international race car. It dominated international endurance racing for a handful of years. For that reason alone I have a real problem being critical of them.
