1 of the 900 234 118 02 shim

On Order but will not arrive in time for this weekend

900 273 003 01 - Lock Ring “should we have 2 in case one gets away"

Only 2 snap rings? You better go and get medication right now. Of course, Bill has magic hands and will probably put the darn thing on in about 1.2 seconds and you guys will all be standing around wondering what I was talking about. Actually, I only have one circlip in stock, so you will need to be good.

The 118 02 shims are .2mm. I've never had a flexplate flat enough to need one of those....although I do have some, also. I think the shims you are going to need are the ones you don't have (117 02).
They are the thickest shims at 1mm.

Call Mary at 714 879-9072 and give her you address. I'll have her ship the stuff out so that you have it for the weekend. You can use what you need and just replace it when you get it. I will not send any more of the shims that you have.....you will not use what you have, now.

The torque converter can be removed and installed with the transmission on a horizontal plane,in the car. I install torque converters in transmissions sitting on my work bench every day. Here is the Technique I use.

Carefully and gently slide the converter onto the input shaft and stator, hold the converter pilot with one hand to support the Weight, with the other hand grab one of the mounting pads and spin the converter, at the same time gently push in with the pilot hand, use this technique until the converter is seated.

As to the front seal, there is a lot of cyber space misinformation, 95% of the” front seal leaks” from the bell housing,
Is not a direct cause of the FRONT SEAL, it’s the pump rubber O ring that leaks, the pump has to come out
To install the torque converter flange bearings, you need a press, and follow the instructions of the shop manual.

Steve:

Thanks for the indication that this can be done horizontally. That's good information about the pump seal. I still vote for leaving it for now. I'd rather try it on my tranny in the comfort of my garage first knowing that if I botch it I can just leave the car and it for later.

Buy two of them, let the owner install the first one, learn from his mistakes and you install the second one. It’s really not hard to install, on the bench I use an arbor press with a driver, in the car use a small hammer with light taps around the out side of the seal until it starts flush, then tap it easy, until it’s in.

I appreicate the encouragement. The problem, as I have said, is that you don't know you've botched it until everything is buttoned up. I've done seals in unconventional ways before, but this is not my car, and it would be very inconvenient for everyone if we had to redo the whole job. Had I done one of these before, I would feel different.

I think we may need at least one other set of hands to help us muscle the new TT into place.

Cool. As Greg warned, the circlip could be a challenge. I'm bringing my circlip tool collection.

Well, I'm not sure where the guys left off... I had to leave a little after 6 for some evening plans. But when I left the TT was all together sans shims & clips until a later attempt to be made with more suitable snap-ring pliers, and the heat shields were going on.

We did succeed in swapping out the TT without loosening the rear xmember or cutting the bellhousing. It would have been wretched doing this alone. Without all of the helping hands on jacks, TT, bellhousing, lights, etc. you'd need the patience of Methuselah to go it alone. But with all of the enthusiastic participants it wasn't so bad, and saved the cost & trouble of an alignment.

Thanks guys, for putting up with my dumb questions.
