Default Lowering seats???

Hello all...

I just acquired a very nice '85 928S, 31,000 orig miles. I was very fortunate!!

Anyway, I would love about another inch of headroom!! Has anyone come up with a way to lower the seats?

Thanks!

Wayne

A common complaint! Were all the guys on the design team 5'6"?

Hope you really enjoy that shark. Read the FAQs here.

Congrats.

been there...best way for me was to swap out my seat at the race track..i go to a kirky seat when neccessary.. it mounts to the rails no sliders's..plenty of head clearance with my helmet on... i got it down to a science...it can be done in 15 minutes....i would imagine you want something more for everyday-right ? what helped me in my stock seat was to sit back more, tilt seat a bit -- just beyond the sunroof. there is more room there but then you may be too far away from the steering wheel...no problem i brought the steering wheel to me by adding some spacers..my wheel is a momo wheel..
i have an extra spacer that i could sell you if interested ..
good luck

Took me a while to get used to a ''laid back'' driving style. Also drove with the headlights up for a while.

You can do it. Woodsrider is 6'5" and he is very comfortable in his beautiful marble grey 1985. He says his knees were the biggest issue in his 944 but not in the 928. He lowers front and back of the seat all the way and winds the seatback a bit backwards, he seems fine. It has been done to lower the seats in other ways. First, if you buy 944 seats (not recommended) they will be lower (thinner). Also, someone here has removed some stuffing from the seat and lowered it a lot and yet someone else has cut the seat rails lower. I am willing to bet if motivated I could cut the seat lowering mechanism lower so it sinks deeper. One should look at the stops, where each motor stops.

I needed more clearance for driving with my helmet on. I don't like the 'laid back' seat position other settled for so I cut the seat mounting brackets with a plasma cutter and re-welded them lower. Got about 2" more clearance, enough so that I can *just* fit in with the helmet on.

I've considered a few options to stop my head hitting the sunroof box in my '81. ('84{?} up have 1" lower seat mounts.)

1) Custom flat sliders to replace the manual sliders - 3/4" drop

2) Drill out spot welds on seat mounts (#2)

3) I saw somewhere on the internet (but cannot find again) a roof 'bubble' for 356 race cars. You cut a hole in the roof, and put the bubble in so you have room for your helmet! If the sunroof would still slide back, I thought about doing this to my sunroof box.

4) Cut out sunroof box.
