I'm shopping for a new set of seats for the 928, probably fixed shell seats. I'm looking for ideas, to see what others have done to install a seat as low as possible. The only setup I've taken a close look at is JL's car in the pic below, in his car I don't have enough headroom. I would like to retain some type of slider so Lorelei is still able to drive the car.
Has anyone cut out the factory mount and bolted a seat directly to the floor? Doing that with a side mount seat should give me more than enough head room.
Thanks!

erik, i have a set of recaro pole positions and i highly reccomend them. they are more supportive than stock seats and i find them much better for distance driving. you can customise the seat cushions to get comfy as they lift out with velcro, ive added a lumbar support to mine.
most important though is the mounting kit (with sliders) which is custom and puts the seat just off the floor, i got this from a company here called southbound motor trimmers.

Erik,
I had the same problem. I ended up cutting off, modifying and re-welding the in-car seat mounting rail in a lower position. This allowed the rear mounting point to be shifted closer to the floor by about 1" (the front was not lowered much.) Since your bottom ends up very close to the rear mounting point, you pickup the full amount of the rear drop.

I (wrongly) assumed an aftermarket seat might gain me some headroom. I bought a Corbeau GTS II seat and their slider/mount package. It seemed very slim and much thinner than the monster I removed. I bolted the new slider directly to the fixed structure of the car. The bottom of the new seat is quite thin too but I still am brushing the sunroof. It's an odd thing too, because as a rule I slouch quite a bit relative to my height. I mean I don't even feel cramped for headroom in my brother's '67 Mustang fastback...I lie, I do feel cramped in his fastback, just not as bad.

Thanks and <MORE>, please. I'm rubbing a bald spot. Will it work with stock seats?

i mounted a set of kirky race seats which put me much lower than stock. the driver side seat is fixed and the pass on sliders. a very supportive
seat that is pretty comfortable for rides under 2 1/2 hours. i got mine for the track and now i could put my helmet on with no clearance issues.
i will post some pics soon...

Has anyone ever cut off the whole seat mount (seen below in red)? Wouldn't take very much to build up the floor to be the same height as the frame rail below it with a few pieces of 1" - 2" thick steal.
That way with a side mount, the seat would be on that frame rail (or whatever it is). This should gain a good amount of head room.

As Greg Gray noted, after (?) MY, the body brackets are ~1" lower. It would be nice to weld in those, but I can't bring myself to cut anything.
I drew up some plates to replace the manual sliders, which should net about a 3/4" drop. I offset the plate to plate bolts to the outside so that a long T-handle allen wrench could be used to make adjustments.
I am planning on having them laser cut along with my next batch of ZVA (32V indicators) and see if they help.

I've encountered the same problem installing a set of aftermarket seats into my brothers '83 928. The height of the seats is higher than the stock ones. We've lowered the brackets as much as posible but the head room is probably still 1" less than stock.
All the aftermarket rails will be esentially the same. Most need a bit of fabrication to fit the 928, but at teh end they will all be higher than stock. The core of the problem is that 928 seats are designed alot different then the afftermarket designs. Unless you hack of and alter the floor boards, the aftermarket seats will be always higher than stock.
