Yeah, start with 75W90NS & you're probably good to go. The Redline "friction modifier" is a separate product - comes in a 4 oz bottle - apparently a little bit goes a long way.

By the way, when I bought Redline about a year ago it was ~$8.25/qt. This time around, it was over $14/qt!

Does anyone know of a writeup on this swap? I also have an LSD waiting to go back into my 86.5 if I ever get the engine back in and running. It would be great to have a guide.

There are a couple links in here:

But nothing complete start to finish. Too bad Dwayne hasn't swapped one.

Well, ideally you should have the LSD disassembled and inspected for wear problems with the small gears and the plates, as others have advised here. Mine has about the right torque spec, so I chose to leave it alone for now. In terms of the tranny, the most common issue inside is worn plates in the clutch packs, most often the first one you get to (K1). That and inspection of the bands and "pistons" for issues. One of my pistons had a broken locater pin. On first look he thought my K1 clutch plates looked OK, which is pretty amazing at 240K hard miles, but he ended up replacing them. The primary problem for me was a leak at the torque converter. I replaced the end seal and primary pump o-ring and it leaked worse than before, but I did this with the tranny sitting horizontal still on the crossmember but just lowered to gain access - not a good idea. It should be done out of the car, tranny standing vertical, at least for S4's. The earlier smaller trannies with smaller torque converters have been serviced successfully the way I tried, but the later ones are much larger and harder to handle. You can see from my current avatar that I eventually conceded to removing the tranny, and once out I decided to have someone go inside as well.

I'm picking the tranny up today! Now the fun of hoisting it back up into place begins.

That tranny does look good laying on the floor Bill, followed your trials getting it there. Congrats on the new and improved... good luck with the install. May the 928 force be with you....

are you sure it wasnt it in gear? if you truely have a open diff, you can get both to burn out, usually best in turns

I will probably go back to ORR 145 class. I've spent the last 2 years helping George in his unlimited attempts, but I think I'm done with that after the last fatal incident. I'm starting to do track events with Jim Morton, but that's in a BMW. I still have a 79 928 track car that I need to get back on the track.
