That Delco looks to be soon clogged with grease and thus overheating.
Why not rebuild the old one? Just source the parts here:
http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/bom.cfm
Enter the "AL170X" in the "bill of materials" part block (for the later model Bosch alternator). Then,
order your parts from the local autoparts store, or here:
http://nationsautoelectric.com/catalog.html
Most only require moderate cleaning, new bearings, and maybe brushes. Then you won't defeat the climate control's outside air sensor. The original will last much longer with the original air duct installed.

If this is the case, the red wire on the Painless adapter should be fed power through an ignition-switched supply. If that wire is connected directly to the battery, as proposed, the field coils will always be energized. This will be a constant draw on the battery and will eventually kill the battery if the car is not started fairly regularly to replenish the charge.
Am I wrong??

That's great, a solution to a problem on the cheap- kind of like me using my 928 to go to the thrift store or something. I'm surprised as well- I think I heard talk of 140 watts!
So what about the big 3-?
N?

That what gets me Normy.
All these years a kit could easy have been made up and sold for lot more. The Delco fits nice and produces steady voltage that the never Bosch could maintain.
Imagine 14.2 volts at idle! A/C on, driving at night (halogen headlamps), 2 amps pounding bass, 8"cooling fan on constantly.....
