Good Call on the smaller belt. That would certainly help with not requiring to modify the bracket or stretching the belt to where the alternator butts up against the PS pump. I wish I thought of that!!

I still had to modify the adjustment bracket, cut the small notch in it. The distance between the pivot bolt and the adjustment bolt is less on the Delco than the stock alternator, so the adjustment bracket needs the notch to pivot up just slightly. So even with a shorter belt, still needs the notch.

I reinstalled the resistor when I installed the new printed circuit board. I didn't check it's value.
Everything appears to be working as it should though.

Lot of bang for the buck with this swap. $51 alternator (shipping was under $10), plus I had the discount coupon from Rock Auto, pigtail was $13, belt was $12. It was about $80 total. There was no core required so I get to keep my old stock alternator (will reinstall when the 928 market goes through the roof and stock OB's are worth $100K!!) )))

Ok guys I just got done doing the MOD. Went in with very little trouble. Problem is I still have very low output. Going down the road if I hit my breaks it will drop the voltage so far that my radar detector screams low voltage. At idle the voltmeter only reads maybe 10 volts. All this is identicle to the other almost new alternator I had in the car. It was a Bosch I had got off ebay. Originally the car had a paris-rhone in it. Not sure where to head now. I thought the GM was going to fix the problem. Jason

Have you cleaned all the grounds? I am getting an alternatormade from these guys LINK for my 85. They can probably make one for you with higher ouput. I don't have a strong recommendation as I haven't installed mine yet.

There is a fix for your issues!!!

Many years ago, a very small, boutique auto supplier in a small obscure town called "Zuffenhausen" developed a revolutionary method for resolving your issues. It has been tested over and over and its success rate is 100%!!! Here it is: http://www.mailordercentral.com/928i...928 603 011 AX

Have you cleaned all the connections already? Alt connections I assume are good since its new - disconnect the battery and clean the 3 connectors at the front jump post.

Next measure the voltage there when running does it still look low?

If needed also make sure the battery post, battery ground strap & ground point, starter main connections and bolts at the top of the CE panel are all clean and tight.

Next is the rest of the ground points - but especially the ones above CE panel, battery and at the very front clip.

Maybe make up a wire carefully routed - so you can monitor the alternator terminal voltage directly - does it track what you are seeing in the car...?

Great heinrich. Real funny. Seeing as how I've got 2 alternators doing the same thing a new porsche probably wouldn't fix the problem. The one I originally replaced was doing almost the same thing but IIRC it wasn't this bad. Replying to your beautiful post actually made me realize that I think what ever the problem is it has gradually gotten worse. Thanks for the crappy post something positive actually came from it.

Alan I did all the grounds when I bought the car which was about 1 year ago. I'm heading out to do the rest. One of the PO's jacked with the pod so I think that will be coming out tonight if I don't get any satisfaction cleaning the other posts up front.

I will need alot of output for brighter lights, electric power steering, a gear oil pump, etc - so is tyhe big one doable? Is 130 amps enough?

Alan does the amp meter read the battery or the alernator output? My battery was close to dead. I cleaned the jump terminal and no change. I pulled the ground of the battery while running and the car stays running. I've got the pod tore apart now. While in there I changed the speedo gear that was bad(Still speedo doesn't work ). Readings I get at the jump terminal are 14.56 but if I remember correctly my meter wasn't reading corectly last time so I need to get a new one before I can believe my readings. This thing is making me mental. I also swapped the guage and the resistor and no change. The light lights up as usual on start up. This thing is killing me. A whole day wasted and I'm no better off than I was before I started.

Since someone brought this thread up again does anyone happen to know where we can get different size pulleys for our alternators? I think rotation speed at idle is to low.

What size is the pulley you've got on there now?

I'd have to go measure but it's the stock size.
