Delco Alternator Conversion
Fed up with the Bosch 55 amp rebuild?! Do this:
Delco CS 130 Alternator. Cooling fan internal as well as external. 105 amps. 14.5 V at idle. I picked it up at Auto Zone for $70.00 Lifetime warranty. Tell the counter person it's for a 1988 Camaro, 2.8L. You also need a $13.00 delco pigtail connector from Painless Wiring). One wire to splice into.

Brian G: So, this works with the original alternator's exciter resistor in the pod, and keeps the charging system's warning indications happy? Yes, no additional resistor is needed, thou the Volt gauge is still 1 volt off.
The GM pulley was ribbed, I changed over to V style. (Motorsports crank pulley is V style).
I combed the "LESTER" book for hours. Their's no direct fit alternator to cross over to. The camaro style is as close as you can get. A 5 mm spacer is all that is needed on the top bolt. Pulley alignment is perfect.
The CS 130 is a 105 amp alternator. Aftermarket has a kit to change the stator and end cover. This bumps the amps to 140. I don't think the extended end cover would clear the oil filter. The other GM alternator is the CS 144 140 amps. Is bigger in diameter again I think it would have clearence problems.
At idle speed, all accesories on (including two electric fans and 300 watt amp) the system voltage is 12.5 at 60 amps. Off idle volts go to 14.3 and 75 amps.
Without the aux fan on, voltage at idle is 14.0.

Porsche OEM wiring to the back of the Bosch or Paris Rome alternator is one eye lug consisting of two red wires >> Battery charge.
The other connection is voltage sense/exciter. Green wire I think.
The Delco connections are:
Large battery wire to Batt terminal.
Red wire of Painless wire adapter to batt terminal.
White wire of Painless adapter to be spliced into Porsche harness, Green wire.
Painless Wire Adapter P/N 30707

From having ordered a replacement rear cover for my '86 car, and having gotten one that didn't fit, I'd say that there is a case configuration difference. There wasn't a whole lot of actual size difference in terms of the face dimensions, though...

Great swap toofast!! I spent $267 for a bosch unit, the delco peice is much better. One question not answered is cooling hose needed? My last alt. failed due to exhaust heat.

Yes, cooling hose is installed. The internal cooling fan draws air in from the rear. Better cooling of the bridge and stator. But cooler air is still needed.
