I cut some 1/8" cork gaskets for heads to intake seal. I got some tubes of right stuff. I'm ready to go. I would like to bolt it all together with a piece of 1/2" steel flat bar where the heads would be and test the intake for leaks on my work bench and then take the flat bar off and bolt it to the heads. Anybody else did this before? Any suggestions?
I'd speculate that the 1/8" thick gasket will create the condition to permit the manifold base to distort when the bolts are torqued and be a cause for leaks rather than prevent leeaks. Put the manifold in place with loose bolts only to locate it. Try to rock the manifold. See if it fits flat and firm against the heads. If it fits well, then you don't need a thick gasket. If it doesn't fit flat and solid, then fix that problem first. I made a gasket from 1/32" gasket material. I used a gasket sealer that would allow disassembly better than the right stuff. I think Copper Coat. The manifold fit tight and didn't rock on the heads. I didn't torque the bolts more than the spec and it doesn't leak.

Darien,

Yes. I'm going with a 8 rib 10 lb pulley. I will also call DR for the ST chip.

Louie,

Yes. I'm going with the 1/8" cork gasket to allow for lower plate warping. Should I use stock 87 up rubber gaskets w/ spacers on my 86.5? Will they work?

I don't thig stock gaskets give a tight enough of a seal. I recall DR saying that with the OE gaskets, the boost leaked out. That's why Andy was using the lenoleum material with Right Stuff.

Andrew: This is news to me. A bunch of us went with the stock gasket and 1/8th spacers recently, and I though DR modified his latest manifold to include spacers and use the stcok gasket. I can tell you that I had lots of trouble with sealing using the "linoelum" material and Right Stuff, although this may have been due to warping of the base plate which I subsequently reinforced internally with spacers.

I think that's correct as well, Bill, although in my recent discussions with DR, I think he's revised the spacers for the gasket to be 3/16" rather than 1/8".

Any another big, public shout out THANK YOU to Charles for hooking me and others up with the 2nd run of injector bushings. They're fantastic. Little by little, I'm getting my car back together too.

I'd like to thank Charles also, they look great. I bought the DR prototype intake and TS Cameron had. DR has been great and is working on the parts to get me going! The adventure begins! I've read the whole post, some great stuff here.

Looks like I will pull the motor. I need to do MM, rack bushings, pan gasket anyway. I also want to paint the engine compartment black. At this point I going to replace the head gaskets and crank bearings while I'm at it. The car has 59K miles and should be an oil squirter block 87 sn 0444.

Looks like I will get the 42lb injectors, do I need the 044 fuel pump also?
Ford Lightning pump good for the intercooler?

I will post some pictures of my wheel well area this weekend, my bumper openings are much wider on the Strosek and I was thinking about mounting intercoolers there.

Thanks,
Glenn

Yes. Yes... Sorry I forgot about that conversation. I'm still on the linoleum. My apologies.

Any thoughts to creating a better looking intake for the Keel kit?

I think several people have used the stock gaskets with metal tube spacers to keep the squish under control and still allow torquing the bolts. Should work. Sometimes the stock gasket port cutout doesn't match the port very well.

Exactly why I'd love to find a way to make it look better before it goes on!

But unfortunately it doesn't work on the Supermodel Kits.. One of these days the right idea will hit me (that doesn't require a complete do over).

My stock metal gaskets (86.5) still look good. I was thinking about just putting right stuff on them and using them. Any thoughts on that?
