WOW! What a weekend. I'm sooo glad to be back home. I'd be even happier to actually have my car come home with me. Had to ad it to the Roberts lawn ornament collection. Did manage to trash Deals Gap for a few runs so it wasn't a total wash.

Sure would like to thank those that helped try to fix (what appears to be) my fuel distributor, among other things... Kempf (Beagle), Falkenberg, Parsons, Wally (father 928), and especially Dave and Jeannie. I would rather have one hell of a hangover and a few BRP speeding tickets than to leave a dead soldier.

Good to finally meet some new faces, and always good to hang with ol' pals, even those that keep you up until 5:30 am drinking warm beer and single malt scotch. Oh, and you too Silver, my toolbox still smells like coffee.

One person who deserves a big round of thanks is Mark Silver, who brought a big Toyota truck and flat-bed trailer to the event to act as a 928 recovery vehicle. It did get some usage!

Thanks, Mark!

Default What a blast!

This was our first SITM but it definately will not be the last.

Dave, Jeannie Thank you for a wonderful event. You really made my son Steven and I feel at home and part of the community.

Wonderful to meet so many people, Greg, Ron, Rixter, Mark, Wally and so many more.

On the way home our Shark ate a deer on I-64 in Illinois. OUCH! Not sure what hit the windshield but I think it was the headlight.

Also, does any know a traffic lawyer in Madison, NC? Got nailed by a state trooper and would like to avoid the points.

One story I forgot to mention...

After the dinner on Saturday which btw, was very tasty!, many of us headed to the Roberts' palacial estate for some fun and drinking. Thanks again to Dave and Jeannie for letting us share your home, shop, tools, lift, and inventory.
As you can imagine, things went fairly late. Tony and I left at about 1:30 AM along with 3 other cars: The Whites, Tim Murphy in his Murf 928, and Drew (sorry forgot your last name) in his not-quite-sure-I-want-to-make-it-a-track-car track car. The Whites led followed by Murph, me and then Drew. We were doing pretty good whipping through the twisties at slightly faster than posted speeds .

When we turned onto a fairly straight stretch, I noticed Drew starting to fall back. Then I noted to my First Officer while taking my foot off the accelerator, "Hey Tony! There's 2 sets of headlights in my rearview mirror. I thought there was only one car behind us ."
F.O. - "Naw! There were 2 cars behind us! "
Me - "You sure? "
F.O. - Yeah I'm sure! "

So I dropped the hammer to try and catch back up to Murph. Then that extra set of lights came up really fast!

Rollers! Damn!

F.O.- [Pointing to my V1] "You want me to take this down?"
Me- "Nope. He didn't get us on Radar, I'm pretty sure we're okay."

I pulled over. I couldn't roll my window down as the lifting arm was kind of broken, so with my door open the cop (a younger guy) says,

Cop- "I guess you know why I pulled you over...?"
F.O.- "Yeah we know why..."
Me - [Me thinking "Shutup Tony!"] "No sir! Not quite sure... why don't you tell me..."
Cop- "Well I paced you doing 70 in a 40... sorry 45 zone. If I could have, I would have pulled all three of you over. So is there a Porche convention in town?"
Me- "Yep, we were at Grandfather Mountain today." [not wanting to disclose the location of my accomplices]
Cop- "Do you have your license, sir?"
Me- "Here you go officer."
Cop- "In case you're wondering, I'm not going to give you a ticket. But you better tell your friends that they had better slow down. If a trooper catches them speeding, they will get a ticket."
F.O. & Me [in perfect unison] - "Yes Sir."
Cop- "Here you go Mr. Olson. Here's you license. Please slow it down. Have a good evening."
Me- "You too sir"

I closed the door. Then my trusty First Officer looks over at me with the look of a 17-year old kid who just got away with the greatest crime of the century...

F.O.- "How'd did you do that? [giggle giggle]"
Me- "I learned the hard way to never admit to ANYTHING."

We got under way and within a few minutes, saw the Whites and Murph heading back into the Bee's nest to make sure we were okay. Lucky for them the cop and turned around and headed in the opposite direction and their paths never met. Shortly thereafter, they blew past me heading back to the hotel.

F.O.- "C'mon... go fot it. What are the chances?"
Me- "That's easy for you to say... you're not the one who's gonna get the ticket!"

I may have left out a few things, but that' about how I remember it.

Lesson: Never admit to anything. If you're the passenger... Shut the hell up! Let the driver either dig his way in or out of the situation. And be polite.

No harm, No foul! Nice cop. Deserves officer of the year in my book.

Phil,
It was nice meeting you & your son Steven. As far as the ticket, check to see if you can take driving school online. Also, how bad is the damage to the shark? Post picks if you can.

Yeah, we saw that cop sitting there when we left, and were going to call the garage, and let everyone else know, but there was no cell service for my phone. He was waiting at the carwash less than a block away from D&J's with his lights off. He was doing a pretty good job of hiding, but we left at 12:30, so maybe it was another one.

That was about the way it went down to the last detail! Didnt you mention to me you had an ousttanding warrent for your arrest as well in there some where?

Heres the screenshot of a small segment of your drive down to the resturaunt. I cant recall if it was hwy 80 or 221? Knockingon .9gs there in a left hander! I think the accleration Gs may be off a bit as most of this was down hill. Either way i think those that didnt attend will get an idea of what we all got to experience. The fun one is John K's drive up the hill after taking me back to the hotel so i could ride down with you guys to the resturant. Ill post that one in a sec...we didnt hit traffic until the top of the hill if i recall.
Thanks again!

Hey, I only kept you up until 5:00AM, that last 1/2 hour was Kempf's fault. And the beer was a perfect temperature........by German standards.

This is the GTECH file of Kohn Krawcyzk's ride up to the park where the event was held. He was kind enough to run me back to the hotel to drop off my rental. We had a bit of fun on the way back up
A much longer and twistier run and fortunately we didnt hit traffic until near the top. Not bad for an OB and again shows the twistiness of some of the roads we got to play on this weekend. Really was a fun drive...everywhere actually! Beautiful state!

Next time Im going to get Bill or Darien to snag me a G-suit from Nellis AFB

Disregard the RPM readings as they were off a bit, i hadnt calibrated it to either Andrews or Johns car.

I tell ya, it sure would be fun to have a substantial open stretch of the parkway or some of those local roads to have some uninhibited fun with. Im again seeing the appealing fun factor of rally racing....Now those guys are nuts!

We have noticed that each event seems to have a "most common failure", and this year it was "no starter action"! If I remember correctly, there were SIX 928s that had either intermittent or nonexistent starter action when the key was turned. We got them all fixed - even David C's GTS, where it started working after we installed a temporary by-pass.

"Luckiest Failure" probably goes to Larry G, who's car literally died of brain failure while pulling up next to David's shop! A bit of testing, and we (thanks, Wayne!) installed the ECUs from DR's GT into Larry's S4, and he was running again.

We had one water pump failure - it had been installed with the new timing belt 20,000 miles ago. A short flatbed ride (thanks, Mark!) to DR's place, and a parking lot pump and timing belt change (by the owner and a friend, thankfully) got things right again.

An interesting problem popped up when Samatha's green S4 (with Eric driving) started blowing flames from the exhaust, and had a VERY visible red glow underneath the car (it was dark at the time). First thing checked was a BINGO, with a driver's side coil wire burned thru and shorting to the belt cover. They actually had a spare coil wire in the car! A five minute check and repair on the shoulder of the road, and they were on their way again.

One of the supercharged cars broke the front crank bolt, shedding the pulleys and belts (but no timing belt problem). Up on DR's lift, a few moments of tapping with a small sharp punch removed the broken-off bit, some reassembly, and he was going again - until the next day, when the special high-strength bolt from the blower supplier proved to be too long. It had bottomed out rather than clamping up, so the pulleys were loose. Cutting a little of the bolt off fixed the problem - hopefully for good.

Scott's cab had fuel issues, and while CIS guru Jay Kempf found and fixed several problems with crud in screens and filters, there was still a problem. They ran out of time and parts, but Jay thinks that it needs one O-ring, which he has at home, and a quick disassembly/reassembly to be in better condition than before.

Rixter somehow hadn't managed to flush the brake system on the new S4 (after all, he had owned the car for several hours!), and boiled the fluid on DR's favorite road (NC 80). Jay Kempf (of course) had ATE Blue in his car, and I had tools, so a quick brake bleed and Rixter was on his way - with a little more restraint, however.

Lots of HVAC vacuum testing, and we got some of the systems working again.

Earl and Gary set up a NASCAR-style (strings and levels) alignment shop in DR's top garage, and removed a bunch of toe-out (front and rear) from one car.

Lots of manual sets went home at a special SITM-only discount from the regular $215, and also saving the shipping cost.

Don't let the tone of this post fool you - only a small percentage of the 928s there had problems - it's just that I saw the problems!

Even the folks who had problems appeared to have a very good time. Wish that you had been there!
