How much should I expect to pay a competent Porsche specialist garage to have the main seals and gaskets replaced on the automatic transmission of my '89 S4?

Not cheap - probably around $3K, including labour to R&R the tranny.

Are you sure the seals are toast? Often times a good cleaning and tightening of all pan and mating surface bolts can significantly reduce or eliminate most leaks.

Also check the ATF cooler lines and the Vacuum-modulator valve seal.

If you can get up under the car and look upward to the area between the torque-converter and the tranny case, THAT's where it'll be wet if it's the front main seal. That is the torque converter itself, on that side, and/or the transmission case up in there. If that area is dry, you're good!

Well, I had the transmission removed, all seals and gaskets replaced, then refilled with Dextron, and re-installed for $1,634.87 out the door. Work was done by European Motorsports in Vista. Joe tells me they regularly maintain 40 928s in the area and, in my experience, they do pretty good work.

I wonder if Joe is an "Honest" Joe?

Joe Vampola's European Motorsports has been in business in the same location for at least ten years and he is highly recommended by a very large following of Porsche, BMW, and Merc owners in the area. I have had other work done by him and it has always been satisfactory. I posted the thread because I wondered if others on this forum may have found better pricing for this type of service with specialty transmission shops. I particularly like European Motorsports because they welcome you back into the shop to view the work in progress. In this instance they showed me the faulty parts (o-rings) while still in place. I should point out that the price I paid was just for seal replacement, not a rebuild. I'm pleased with the results so far - a clean garage floor.

OK, just some seals replaced. Not a complete teardown and entire reseal.
