Your parts list looks familiar. I did all the coolant hoses and accessory belts at the same time. My cam gears and oil pump gears were worn, so I did those as well. I will bring spare cam gears that are decent per chance yours are mooched up.

Thanks Dave and Nicole for the fender covers. It would be good to have 2 sets cuz maybe we'll need them on another car.

I hope my gears aren't mooched up - that sounds bad. T, you'll have to give us copies of the tape for the next time. Sounds like you and Dave are the official videographers/ photographers.

No, we don't have a time yet. I have no idea how long this takes. When should we start? And I'll get you all directions - don't worry. Probably easiest is to PM my address then you can go to mapquest, expedia maps or whatever.

Well, figure 8 hours if the water pump bolts gods cooperate and there is just the usual amount of stubborn gasket material to clean off the water pump and tensioner areas. If we have more experienced hands this could go a lot faster.

You could start prepping the patient by disconnecting the battery ground and removing the fan shroud and distributor caps.

Rich and I can do that prep work no problem. We did that when we checked the tension a couple months ago.

I have the Kempf tool. Is that what we'll use to adjust tension? Or do you have the other gauge?

Beth:

If you have checked tension before then you can go further into the front end part removal and get the right and left belt covers off. Just leave the belt on! :-)

We'll use your Kempf tool for tension check after we install the new belt.

Gotcha. We can get the belt covers off too. Check.

I'm confused as to how much distilled water I need and how much coolant? Dave you confused me. 8 gallons distilled water and one gallon coolant? And red line water wetter?

Oh don't worry T. In the "175 easy steps", we'll only do about the first 6 or 7.

You can always watch the tape backwards to get how the covers come off etc.

Beth,

I would say you'd want 3 gallons of distilled water, 1 gallon of anti-freeze, and a bottle of
water wetter. I think Dave was suggesting you get extra distilled water to flush the system.
Me I just use regular water to flush the sytem, and then do the final fill with the distilled water.

What I do is flush out the block with a garden hose run forcefully w/o removing the block plugs. That leaves 2 gallons of water in the block. With the soft Bay Area water, I don't bother with distilled. I just fill up with coolant from there. Ends up with a 50/50 mixture. Napa water may not be as soft, so distilled may be called for. I thought the system capacity was 4 gallons (like George indicates), so 1-2 gallons of water should be enough. Anything between 25% and 50% coolant should be good.

George is right, I was suggesting more distilled water if you are changing coolant type/flushing the system. My thinking on that is, flushing with tap water until it's clean is a great first step. And yes, you can fill it with the appropriate coolant mix after doing so. But doing one fill/drain cycle with distilled water will help to dilute and flush out any tap water, reducing the minerals in the system.

Now, I'm a bit of a nut sometimes when it comes to the quality of work that I do. I'll solder and heatshrink a connector that many other people would crimp and forget. But on the tap water, I fight an ongoing battle with sediment and calcification where I live, so in my particular case I chose to take an extra step to minimize the minerals that got into my cooling system. I'll freely admit that the extra step may be overkill.... but it won't hurt anything.

In a nutshell... What George said is fine as a minimum.

Mental notes:

On February 11, go to bed early. Rise shortly after midnight and head to Napa with fender covers. If you get tired of all the 928 stuff and petting the puppy, head over to the factory outlets for some shopping. Expect to get home tired...
