Commercial/Retail Architect running an office for a large CA based firm with 6 offices in the southwest. Although not near as large as it used to be... not many architectural firms are these days...
Office is in Phoenix, but lack of work in the area is BRUTAL. We are blessed right now doing work mainly in CA, TX and CO. Really love doing residential architecture, but just doesn't pay enough. Still hope someday to semi-retire and design and build large custom homes as a "hobby"...

I had not seen this in the past and have read through all entries.
what an interesting, eclectic group of people.
if you think this is an interesting range of occupations, I happened to look a the Carrera GT threads some time ago. a young man posted the question "what to you people do to be able to afford a CGT". now that was an interesting read.
kshipp, after sending you the PM and reading stan's note, I just HAD to post an entry.
yea, used to do this over my morning cup of coffee.
yea, the little tiny magnetic donuts, 1/4 MB ram was a cabinet as big as a refrigerator.
I have been in IT for over 35 yrs, and just biding my time until my 201K recovers enough for me to retire. I started with mainframe assembler programmer/systems programmer, shifted into SNA networking, and then got dragged kicking and screaming into IP networking.

Did you do any program dump and trace reading? Most of my Assembler expertise (IBM mainframe) came from reading object code in dumps.

When the mainframe only had 1/4 mb ram, every bit counted!

I am a Buyer/Internet sales for a small Company here in Stowe Vt. I've been a Buyer since 97-98 when I left Polaroid Corp. I have been in the SKI and Cycling Industry off and on for about 30years. So I get to live the life of a Ski Bum in the Winter and Mtn & Road Bike and Drive my 86 in the summer.....Hey, I just realized.... Dreams do come true!!!lol......now if the economy would just settle down and turn around...I could add a little $$ to the dream....otherwise I'll need to lighten the load and sell the 83....they will have to pry the 86 from me though!...lol

Did you hear the one about the Architect that won the lottery? They kept practicing architecture til they ran out of money.
An old joke shared by a structural engineer who loathed architects. Too bad there is a bit of truth in it.

Yeah I guess there are a few of us architects here and yep it is a completely quixotic profession...
1) Architect; did mostly commercial, institutional and entertainment industry stuff for big firms. Then got into high-end residential a few years ago on my own (its really a different animal!). Most unique project I've done I named 'Osprey House' which is having 2 different TV shows done on it, still shooting one and the other is almost ready to air soon. Have had a good run being self employed, now wondering if I'll be able to sustain and land my next big project before I have to work as a consultant or employee for again for someone else.
2) Fitness club owner; I co-own a fighting gym in Cambridge that ensures I have absolutely no free time. I designed the space and managed the contractors and act as a trainer when I have time, although we have several other really good coaches and managers who do most of the day to day work. The gym was in Chinatown before we moved it to Cambridge a year ago. Its a fun and rewarding business and its starting to really take off in the new location.
3) Father of a 4 year old girl; my favorite and most challenging job of them all!

the mathematicians had a similr joke about the engineers. our frustration was engineers would miss-apply the formulas because they did not understand the assumptions under which they were valid.
when we were planning to build our house, sits on the downhill side of a 2:1 slope, the residential architect explained we would also have a structural engineer and a geophysical engineer to ensure our house was firmly set into the hillside. Since they would all be responsible, I KNEW that meant they would spec the blueprints to at least 125% of loads and I would pay for all of it.
beautiful house, still standing firm.
art , theory, and practice.

Was a systems programmer for a few companies, then consulted as one for @12 years. One way of endearing myself to the employees where I consulted was to do all the dump/trace work. They hated it, and I loved it
