Rear axle nut removal

Rear axle nut removal
I was reading with interest Dwayne’s “Torque Tube, Torque Converter Bearing Replacement Procedure” and noticed that he used a large breaker bar with a cheater pipe to break the rear axle nuts loose. In the case of the rear suspension already being out of the car, is it acceptable to use a high-torque impact wrench to break those nuts loose?

If your gun can provide the necessary torque I see no problem using such - the tightening torque is some 320 ft lbs [or whatever] so breaking that free may take quite a bit more torque to give.

my HF gun is rated at about 1100ft-lbs breakaway so we shall see. Thanks for the response!

That's how we remove them, in the shop.
The axle nut is a one use item, BTW.

Mine were on pretty snug and I had to use a 700 ft/lb wireless Dewalt impact to get them off. They came off pretty quick with that.
If all else fails you can heat the nut with a torch.
Just make sure your socket is strong enough to handle the abuse!

Hmmm...
If only there was some way to search for something....

Yes, I'm a smart-a**.
On a more serious note, the big Milwaukee is a great piece of equipment. A friend has one and I've used it a few times.
The torque in the motor will twist the whole thing in my hand. Even holding it tight, it will go nearly a quarter turn. Lug nuts are off in an instant.
After trying to take the crank bolt off my car (no flywheel lock) with a pair of 4' breaker bars (one on the bolt and a chain wrench wrapped around the already damaged pulley), the impact took it off in about 2 seconds. Maybe a dozen 'hits'.
