Default What does the trained eye see?

This 928 just stands out to me for some reason:
After reading the link with all the dyno results, I think I would be satisfied with an Auto. The interior has me a little concerned, but I think it may grow on me.
It doesn't look like its going to sell at the current price, so I may contact the owner and arrange for a closer look.
I'm still so new when it comes to 928's (and wishing to learn all I can) What do you 928 owners see (good/bad) when you look at an ad like this?
Man I have buying fever! Does it go away with time??
Thanks all!

Looks like it might have a Devek radiator.

As far as what the eye can see, the eye cannot see the internals or electrics.
That is what a PPI is for!

It looks nice, but shiny paint is just smoke and mirrors.

Also, that red interior has got to go!
UGH!
But the good thing is it is not the whole interior.
The seats are already a bit worn, so perhaps you could recover them, or find some seats from another car? And you could get the other pieces like the door panel inserts with no problem.

You should go check it out or see if someone on this forum lives close by. Run a carfax on it too. It looks pretty nice to me. I like the Blk / Red. It reminds me of the Munster's. The fever never goes away. Even after you buy one. Good luck.

Is the rear end a little low?

It looks to me like both the front and the rear are low. Easy to fix. One more PO that preferred looks to performance.

I happen to like that red, its different and takes away from it being an all black car. Looks like the oil pressure gauge is broken though. At the temperature the engine is at in Park, it should read a lot lower. Gas gauge looks suspect too, but those are kinda trivial.

The engine is warm and at idle. Indicated oil pressure is at maximum. I'm not sure if this is ok ?

The car looks great, but as everyone has said, a PPI is invaluable - if you can't be there yourself.
BTW, if you're beginning your search, try to get into as many 928's as possible - to look, feel and listen: The experience is invaluable, and will help eliminate that rush to " I'm 'gonna marry the first one that says 'yes'".
Furthermore, in your evaluations, forget the fast driving: yes, that's important, but they all go fast. Test that later. Initially, sedate driving will allow you to hear and feel much more about the car. Most (Dealers) who sell such a car would like nothing better that to have you stick your foot into it, and remain bedazzled with the 'Bwwwwaaaaa' until the cheque is signed. Happy hunting!

The car has a MA tag. There is a shop in MA that is very qualified to do a PPI, located in Natick, about 25 minuters from the city, due west on the pike. If you are seriously interested in the car, I can make an introduction to the shop owner. They took care of Gretch's wrenching needs for the first 10 years that I owned her.

There are a few MA located rennlist members, maybe (based on exactly where the car is located) one of us can go look at it for you.

The fever only gets worse, unless you mistreat your shark. In that case it will become disgusted with you, and you will become disgusted with it.

A well cared for shark is a thing of beauty, and imense pride......

Good luck

Wow, you guys continue to show me how little I know about these cars!

bcdavis- If it has a Devek radiator, is that an item of concern? Is that a replacement manufacturer?

Those window sure do look awfully dark. Maybe even darker than the legal limit here in Virginia. Tough to tell if its just the camera.

I do think the red/black interior is pretty "trick". There aren't many shots of the interior though. I would like to have a better idea about the dash area.

Marc, you said the ride height is an easy fix? Did all of these models have adjustable ride height?

I'm unfamiliar with the instrument cluster. The far left gauge (temp?) looks to be at the lowest setting (hard to tell just looking at the back of the needle), and the far right gauge (oil pressure?) is pegged? Does around 800rpms look correct for idle?

Thanks so much Chad for all the information. I see at least 5 different locations in the historical events listing. Would that mean 5 PO's or just someone moving around a lot? Does that odometer reading look like something may be wrong? I see two different readings on the same day.
I would like to know who had it in West Virginia, thats right next door.

Gretch, your ideas sound great. I'm not sure how interested I am yet. I will probably contact the seller for some more info before I decide. I would definately want someone qualified to take a very close look before I get serious. I'm still in the learning stage and a bit overwhelmed!

I'm not really looking to go fast all the time, I just want something I can enjoy on the twisties to and from work everyday & spend some QT with on the weekends. I would probably do more tinkering than driving. I guess I have a lot to learn/consider before making a purchase. Thanks again to all, your help is invaluable!

Yeah these are great to "tinker with".

Re the gauges. If the engine is not warm, and is at idle, then the oil pressure should be pegged at 5 bar. If it is warm and at idle then oil pressure should read approximately 2 bar.

Picture of my "tinkering":

I think is has the stock Behr radiator .. ; nearly all cars look good in photos . Pay for a good inspection , a couple hours of really having it looked over to confirm what has or has not happened over the last 16 years . The recorded odometer readings indicate that it was "stored" for many years hopefully things like coolant , brake fluid , oil were regularly changed . The current seller obviously knows very, very little about 928 S ..thinks it weighs over 4,100 lbs ...thinks the body panels are all ?? aluminum with zinc plating .......But that is not a problem , just recognize that what they SAY may not be correct ....
