I've never driven a 300ZX but I have sat in one and that was enough for me. It felt like being attacked by plastic feel in everything.
The main reason he holds up is that the 928 parts are more expensive and some parts probably are, if you buy them from a stealership. There is a difference in what you get however.

You too can own one of his stroked 928 motors: http://www.icsamerica.com/928/928%20Main.htm
I wonder who makes his custom "FLAT PLANE" cranks I bought a set of Dinan chips for my 750iL from this guy off Ebay years ago before I even owned a 928.

I have been to that website several times and wondered why no one ever brought it up during our *extensive* discussions on strokers. Just another shmoe trying to peddle with smoke & mirrors, I guess.
Obviously, he never really bonded with his cars and is trying to counteract some weird psychological twist with that writeup.

So does anyone here know this John M. DePietro of Staten Island? I can't fault the man for his opinions. Still, after owning NINE 928s doesn't someone here know the fellow? I cannot fully comprehend how he can compare the 300ZXtt to it...apples and oranges indeed. The Nissan is certainly a neat car but its not for me....oh...and it certainly is not trouble free. Just ask the rice boy / boy racer crowd...lots of blown drivetrains in those things. Just my $0.02
ps.
Anyone tried to rectify the "design flaw" as John called it with the 928 engine cam belts? Why not use a Timing Chain like BMW does on many of its engines? Not trying to open a can of worms here...OK?

It appears to me that a good portion of what he said about the 928 is right on the money. Not only that, he offers insight on the 928 that only a more intimate owner would know about.
If that is a picture of one of the 928's he alluded to having once owned, it's looking pretty nice from that angle, as does the 300zx. Those two pictures do not impress upon me someone who would own a 'rat' for a car.

A lot of his ragging includes complaints about the earlier 928's, and he even admits that the latest MY he owned was an '87, and yet he's comparing these cars to the '90-'96ZX series.
"I had 5 Porsche 928's over the last 9 years. one 1978 5 speed, a 1979 auto, an 1985 5 speed and two 1987's"
I'd like to see a 78 Z go head to head with an O.B., or even an '87 Z take on an S4. His whole comparison is weak. It reminds me of the comparison that 911 and Porsche World did with a brand new 996 and a '91 S4. Sure the article was complementary to the S4 (and rightfully so), but why didn't they pull out the GTS that was available?
I'll tell you why. Because the GTS would have kicked that 996's flat six water cooled butt six feet under. I for one sure havent' heard of "legendary Japanese car reliability" being extended to late '70's and mid '80's Z cars, anybody?
Jumping off soap box...

I will have to admit that I to considered a 92-95 3oozx last month before i bought my 87s4. I drove many of them and they are not for me. I could have got one for less then my S4. I also ran across many 300zx on ebay with timeing belt problems or blowewn engines. Most were twin turbos. I thought the body was flimsy compared to the porsche and did not like the miles of hard Jap plastic on the interior. In fact if you look on ebay half the 300ZX have major problems and the owners are just trying to unload them. I think this guy is just a trouble maker trying to convince us Porsche guys that he is of superior Knowledge to us with his new dork ride. We could all have one to if we wanted one as there are tons more for sale then 928 and most are cheap to buy. Mike D

Well... I have an early Z with a fresh '82 motor and '70 carbs. This car is lighter than the first 280, and a bit more powerful as well. The motor is based on a design from Mercedes(Mercedes also sold the design from the gullwing to Chrysler, which became the venerable slant six). The thing ran perfectly for 50,000 miles on the fresh motor with no real attention other than oil, filters, etc. At 50K I changed cap, rotor & plugs. It still runs great, even a bit stronger than new.
The strength of these motors is well known... the early drivetrains are pretty bulletproof. My car has over 300K on it, and the halfshafts are still tight, new spec. I've found that genuine Nissan brake rotors outlast Beck Arnley by about 3:1. Yes, Nissan knows how to make a very solid, reliable car(or did know, anyway).
But I agree, the 928 is a different animal entirely. The 90's Z-cars are fabulous cars for what they are, but they are just as finicky and expensive to maintain as a 928... especially the Z-TT models. Very plasticky inside too. Any high-performace car of this complexity is going to need TLC and $ to keep it up to par. Yes, Z parts are cheaper. But I had a choice, to buy a cleant Z TT or the 928 for about the same price, and I chose the 928.
Consider me converted!
