my fave quote was "The Porsche V8 is not smooth like an american V8" you ok, show me a smooth yankee V8,

overall he has the IQ of a fly, his comments are unproven.

I think someone should show him a link to this forum board, and I think that we should have Marc with the white car pull up beside him, or sterling, or Lag even

I remember a few years ago, he was a regular on the boards (mostly larking).

Like other high-end sports cars, the 928 is not a car for the weak pocket book or a novice DIY type IMHO.

It's too bad John left the 928 world with such a bad taste that he felt a need to dis the 928.

O-Well, to each his own!

First of all, I have owned several Z's in the past (and still do own older ones) as well as my 928. So, I don't understand why he is making this comparison at all. Apples to oranges? More like apples to raisins. Totally different car companies with different purposes, different cars, different markets, different owners, etc.

Second, his comparison is flawed from the beginning. He is generally comparing a 1991 Z (his "new" car) to a 1987 and much earlier 928s. How about a comparison that makes sense - a 1991 300ZX (or even a tt) to a 1991 928 GT. Let's all travel back in time to 1991 for a second . . . if you had the money for either car, who in their right mind would have ever, EVER chosen the Z over the GT?!??! Come on, that's crazy. Even today, if your were to be given a choice of either car with the same mileage and same condition, who in the world would take the Z??

I love the Z cars and am thrilled that they are back, but Porsches they will never be. 'nuff said.

I started this thread in the off-topic area around an article where one of the head guys for Nissan was in an accident while driving a Porsche.

Oh man, I can't stop laughing even though I don't agree!

I guess it scores high marks in the originality category as I've never seen it put quite that way before.

You guys sure are rough on someone who has the luxury to be able to compare two nice cars though. With repect to the 928, he seemed to be very objective, and it didn't appear that he was going out of his way to 'dis' it, either.

My '86.5 is impressively smooth. No vibration from the engine or the drive train. This is my first 928 and I am impressed by it and sometimes intimidated by it. I don't think his comparison should be taken seriously.

I think it makes sense, when you look at the age and condition of the cars he is comparing.
Whenever I compare a new car, with my car, I see vast improvements in ride comfort, electronics, AC, reliability, etc... So I am sure if I drove a 95 GTS, it would seem fine. But if I compare my 83 928, to a newer Z car, yes, it might seem more refined, smoother, etc... And yes, it is cheaper to hot-rod a Z. The only reason I did not buy one, instead of a 928, is the fact that the Zs are a dime a dozen. And I like the looks of the 928 better. I *do* wish I had the cash at the time to get a GTS, in superb condition. Because having a car that has fresh shocks, fresh bushings, and everything works, is sure nice...

So I can see how someone could have those opinions.
I do not think it has to do with the quality of the car.
It has to do with the age, and upkeep...

my uncle has a TT300ZX, flywheel, chip, free flow exhaust - it's wicked quick - what you'd expect from 450hp in a lightweight package....

but his turbos DID cost $3,400 to overhaul, and he has put $6k into it in the last 18 mos in maintenance for motor, brakes & trans...while there are a lot of aftermarket parts and independent wrenches around, he's had the same headaches we have...he just swears in japanise, and we do it in german - and the girls DO like the porsche more...

I wonder how long it takes him to takes his "strokers for sale" website down? Either that or just link it to his Psycho page...

I noticed that he didn't mention the biodegradable propensity of the early Z cars... My buddy had a late 80's 280Z turbo that had rust holes though every panel, including on top of the car around the sunroof. The thing wasn't even five years old at the time. Personally, that always made me think it was a piece of crap.

What bugs me is the "not very smooth" comment of the V8. That and the vibrations in the pannals.

The engine is as smooth as any V8 engine I've ever played with.

To me that sounds like he was driveing around a car with worn out motor mounts. Which will result in some annoying viberations. This viberations will be expecaly manafested in the rear turnk area. That says sad car to me.

The syncros wearing out seems, at least to me, to be a function of the double plate clutch. My car has worn syncros, but with the clutch adjusted properly, it's really mannageable. The problem is when you have a clutch that isn't adjusted exactly right, the car is almost undriveable. Again, that says sad car to me. That or poor clutching techique.

Anyways, thats just a thought.

Harshness? What is he talkng about? He had 5 harsh running 928s? Well, we surely know better. My 82 is the smoothest thing I've ever driven. If 928s are so bad, why stroke one, and owne 5????? I'd think that after actually doing a stroker kit, he'd find out why it was harsh...- Ruf

We all know that 928s run much better if you love them..............They are high maintenance and get cranky with stingy owners.......

Kinda like my bride..............

This nissan guy is a wuss, plain and simple. I've owned a 280zx, supra and MR2 turbo, all decent cars. My brother has a 300TT somewhat modified and its given him nothing but trouble. But the Porsche 928 is an outstanding ride, it hums out a beautiful noise from the factory and there are numerous things that make it a better car all the way around.

You'd have to be an elderly frightened woman to think that the 928 is harsh!!

Gawd, some of you are downright nasty w/ namecalling and all...

Granted his logic is fundamentally flawed in many aspects, he does have a couple of good points. I can only revel in the fact that he has had the ZTT a short time. Give him a few months and I'm positive his attitude will change.

I bet if you go to www.twinturbo.net site they are dancing in the streets over this. To each his own.

I seem to remember that Dave R. at 928 SP had some dealings w/ John over strokers and engines. Maybe nothing ever blossomed from it.

I've owned my 90 300zx na for over two years and I find it a great car. Putting over 25k miles on it. Hard to beat those T-tops. I guarrantee that more sheila's will stare at my Z than at the 928. More guys seem to notice the 928's. Guess which I drive more????? Zoom zoom zoom!

So far I've had to do a t-belt/h20 pump (harder but cheaper than a 928).
Rear pinion bearing
Bad cam sprockets (varible timing crap) $700 new.
starter relay
r&r injectors

I'll have to email John to enlighten him a bit
