Ben's 1982 928 S "restoration"

Seeing the last 928 picture, I realised that I got the coilovers front and back wrong...
i finally tried the new wing on ! Nice !
Now I have to paint the hatch...
Fitted - scanned!
I also scanned the foot area of the driver to see how I can fit a pedal box if needed !
Guess who was right about fitting the coilovers in the wrong end of the car...
I got the tubes for the exhaust !
And ended up restoring the headlight covers !
And I got the wrong rear pads...

Yesterday I was at Raymond Boutinaud Racing to install one of my shifters on one of his GT3 CUP !
We talked 982 for two hours, I got to see its old aluminum roll cage that was used at Le Mans when he won with the 928 !
He has crazy projects for his 928s, I'm in !
I worked on the airbox !
Ok, this one above is crap...
i'll be using a JETTA air filter, big enough for the 928. and placed right in front of the radiator.
Hood closes and i can attach the part on to the rad support !
It's been a long time since I looked at this engine ! i love it !
I started working on the exhaust !
And starting practicing TIG welding
I still have to practice before assembling the exhaust!
looks better with the coilovers in the right place !
And I also welded the new bench !
Hop, it's a mess now ^^
Et voilà !

Saturday was Track day !
Long story short, the Clio is not up to the task... so I'll sell it once the door is replaced !
BUT ! I got to drive one of Raymond Boutinaud Racing's 997 GT3 !!
Maybe next time I'll drive the 928 :P
The cup was ready, but I didn't want to drive it.
The 997 was incredible !
For the clio, it was fast, but boring... Here is some of the fastest laps I did.
The Clio had stickers :
The Michelin PS4 were good ! Consistent all day, no overheating !
Soon I should receive an air compressor to finally use my sandblaster !
That trackday motivated me to finish the 928 !
So, first, I ordered the final version of the plenum !
It'll be PA12 GF40 ! Should be there by the end of the month !
I then took out the radiator. I've wanted to shorten it for a while !
I ran out of argon, so the modification will be for next week.
It does look nice as a display ^^
Once the radiator was out, I took the camshaft holders out to fix a leak I had since the beginning !
Et hop
The gasket was broken right there, were the leak was !
The surface is clean, I'll do the head tomorrow:
I worked on the exhaust too !
This is the 89mm tube to re-make a new end "silencer" :
Flattened it just enought for the tube to slide in :
I then printed this thing :
Et hop
X2
Et voilà !
Tomorrow I'll print the second tool to finish it

The 16 valve cam carrier gaskets can be a re-occuring problem. Greg Brown makes improved gaskets for the application for stupid cheap, but getting them to your location may be hard.

This week on "Ben does stuffs"
The new GT3 !
With double wishbone suspensions !
Yesterday I went to Raymond Boutinaud Racing to scan some 993 and compare them because one was in a crash...
There are worse places to work at...
I learned some stuff ! 993's are a pain to scan because of the round and slick shape...
Without targets, we had to improvise...
The scanning of the door hasn't shown any deformation, but the front passenger shock tower is another story...
Now you'll say why all this and just not simply measure it with a tape measurer ?
Because insurance guy said "no this is not precise, the car is not bent". So now we have the proof, with good precision that the car is bent in multiple ways in the front...
Going back to the shop I had a package !
When it's XOMETRY, it's gonna be good !
Oh oh oh
I need to get the proper bolts and studs for the caliper
About the 928, I've spoken a lot with Raymond about them... and prepare for some big stuff in the coming year !
I got back on the gaskets.
Did both sides.
I hope I'm done with these for a while...
The timing belt is back on
Now, I have to do the oil sump gasket.
Almost there. I don't want to start unless I'm sure I can finish it the same day :
Got some stuff from Lidl, well built... for 32€!
OK, this one is scary !
Today I received that !!!
The new plenum ! I love it !

I have to ask, did you find any good training resources for the EinScan software?
My employer just purchased an EinScan Pro 2X+, but our only scanning training was on a different manufacturer's equipment and their proprietary software package.
Regarding the use of the scanner, that's an application that I'd never seen, but which makes a lot of sense.

What I like most about the software is how much you can play with the mesh model ! Since I work with Fusion 360 after, it's not as easy and I often find myself going back on the einscan software to clean or modify the mesh model !
That's what the vendor told me when I asked them about scanners "uuuh we have absolutely no client using a scanner like that, so we don't have any insight and advise on it" ^^
So far, I'm happy with the purchase
Very nice! It‘s Art!

Finally fixed the oil pan gasket !
And cleaned the subframe !
There it is !
Then I scanned it... because I could !
Putting it back together, one bolt pulled the threads right off... then I broke the threaded insert tap...
Voilà ^^
thankfully I fount another one and was able to finish the job the next day !
I'm putting the steering rack today... the old one, not the new one because it's leaking ! Anybody know where to get a good complete rebuild kit ?
I got the new compressor !
Without instructions... but i figured it out and I'm waiting on the airline and fittings now...
I got my motorcycle driving license... I wanted something old !
and I found one very cool XJ600...
But turns out I have to pay 1000€ to detune it to 34hp with my A2 license...
So I found that !
Husqvarna 401 Vitpilen !
I never though such a small engine could pull that hard all the way to redline !
So I bought it ^^
And it's under warranty !
Ok, back to work now !

Well, it wasn't that hard in the end !
I first started to flatten the tube, then built a well by adding welding material.
It fits
Then I hammered the big tube so it fits perfectly over the smaller tubes.
The lap joint is quite hard to weld, but it's almost done !
I can't wait to hear it !
I received my CNC router !

Lovely looking welds. On my '82 I have a single 3-inch system with straight-through mufflers in the same position. Sounded really good but I lost low-end torque. I added a small straight through muffler just ahead of the tip and the performance gain was very noticeable.

I wanted to keep it twin exhaust so I could have two mufflers and a lower profile than a single 3“ tube.
I can’t wait to start it up again !!

I'm back from vacations !
I received the CNC !
I finally got it running, and cut a big BAD yesterday
Of course I broke a mill bit ahah...
Now I want to try to shorten my radiator with it !
It passed my test, and got its sticker !
I received the parts to build the air system. But no electrician wants to install a tri phase plug... what a pain !
Got a bike to replace the Clio !
Of course I scanned it, with the new software update for the scanner ! Worked wonderfully !
A local garage gave me their 944 gearboxes for me to make one out of two
And gave me a shifter for me to design a better one !
I started by modelling the original one.
Same recipe as always, shorter throw without going overboard, more precise, easily serviceable and not too expensive !
Good thing is that I'll be able to make it "made in Europe" so I can have less stock and still be quick to deliver !
Bas will be three aluminum part, cnc machined here and welded.
Lever will be either zinc coated steel like the original, or stainless.
I'll design the 928 shifter with the same philosophy.
I should have received the brake like parts yesterday... but they forgot them in my order...
I still put on the calipers !
OK, I have some tidying to do and work on the 944 gearboxes
